Gurezi Shina Keyboard Launched to Preserve an Endangered Language
A new Android application called Gurezi Shina Keyboard has been launched to support and preserve Gurezi Shina, a dialect of the Shina language. This is the first time that a digital keyboard has been developed for this language.
Gurezi Shina is an endangered language, spoken by less than 35,000 people in India. It is mainly spoken in the Gurez Valley of Jammu and Kashmir. Until now, there was no keyboard available that allowed people to easily type or write in this language on mobile phones or on the internet.
With the launch of this keyboard, users can now chat, communicate, and write easily in Gurezi Shina on Android devices. Earlier, many special retroflex characters used in the language were not available on any keyboard, including Google SwiftKey. The new keyboard includes all required characters and makes typing simple and accurate.
This development is seen as a basic and historic step in giving the language a digital identity. Although there may be some books written in Gurezi Shina, 2 or 3 books, written by Masaud Samoon, are currently available on the internet, and that too only in PDF format. These PDFs cannot be converted into editable digital text using existing technology.
To save the language permanently on the internet, Irshad Ahmad Lone, Assistant Professor in Computer Applications in the Higher Education Department, took this important initiative in collaboration with Masaud Samoon, a prominent cultural figure from the Gurez Valley.
The Android keyboard is the first major digital development under this initiative. Along with this, work is also in progress on a Gurezi Shina Dictionary app, which is expected to be launched on the Google Play Store within a week, at a very minimal price.

Daksum-Sinthan Road Closed Due To Icy Conditions

Srinagar, January 8(GNS): Authorities said on Thursday that the Daksum‑Sinthan road stretch has been closed due to icy conditions as a precautionary measure.

An Official National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd told GNS that, due to the formation of ice on the road surface, the Daksum–Sinthan road stretch is closed to all vehicular traffic in the interest of public safety.

The prevailing icy conditions have made the carriageway extremely slippery and unsafe for movement.

To mitigate the situation and restore safe traffic conditions, sprinkling of salt and urea is currently in progress, he added.(GNS)

Sheirbagh Traders’ Delegation Meets Traders Federation Anantnag Leadership

Anantnag: A delegation of shopkeepers representing the Sheirbagh area today held an official meeting with the Chairman of the Traders Federation Anantnag, Mr. Sajad Ahmad Hakeem, and the President, Mr. Haji Abdul Rashid Dar, at the Federation’s Head Office, Lal Chowk, Anantnag.

During the meeting, the delegation formally apprised the Federation leadership of several longstanding and pressing issues faced by the trading community of Sheirbagh. Chief among these concerns were persistent road congestion and the acute shortage of designated parking facilities. The delegation highlighted that these issues have led to serious disruption of traffic flow, inconvenience to customers, and a significant adverse impact on business activities in the area. In addition, other matters related to trade, infrastructure development, and overall commercial welfare were discussed in detail.

The Chairman and President gave a patient hearing to the issues raised and assured the delegation of the Traders Federation’s full cooperation and institutional support. They emphasized the importance of coordinated and sustained engagement with the relevant civil and municipal authorities to ensure timely and effective resolution of the problems.

It was unanimously resolved that all stakeholders would work collectively and in a structured manner towards the improvement of commercial infrastructure, protection of traders’ interests, and the overall promotion and betterment of trade in the Sheirbagh area.

Dead Body of Kulgam Youth Found in Tangmarg Hotel, Probe Launched

Baramulla Jan 6:A youth from Kulgam was found dead inside a hotel in the Tangmarg area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday, triggering concern and prompting a police investigation.

Officials said the deceased has been identified as Haziq Reyaz, a resident of Larkipora, Kulgam. He had checked into the hotel and was staying there since last night.

Soon after information about the incident was received, a team from Police Station Tangmarg rushed to the spot and took cognizance of the matter. The body was subsequently shifted for medico-legal formalities.

Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of death, while further details are awaited.

Action Initiated for Violation of Prohibitory Orders on Unauthorized VPN Usage

Anantnag, January 01, 2026:Anantnag Police have initiated action against five (05) individuals who were found using unauthorized Virtual Private Network (VPN) services, in violation of prohibitory orders issued by the District Magistrate Anantnag.
The violators were identified by Anantnag Police, following which security proceedings have been initiated for non-compliance with the lawful orders in force.
It is pertinent to mention that on 27 December 2025, the District Magistrate, Anantnag, had issued prohibitory orders banning the use of unauthorized VPN services with the objective of preventing misuse of online platforms, including encrypted applications, which may pose challenges to public safety and security.

Anantnag Police reiterate their commitment to strict enforcement of lawful orders and to taking all necessary measures to prevent misuse of digital platforms in the interest of maintaining public order and security.
