Apni Party Spokesperson expresses serious concern over the distressing conditions reportedly being faced by pregnant women at Lal Ded Hospital (LD Hospital), Srinagar

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party Spokesperson (JKAP) expresses serious concern over the distressing conditions reportedly being faced by pregnant women at Lal Ded Hospital (LD Hospital), Srinagar, one of the premier maternity healthcare institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.
Pregnancy and childbirth are among the most challenging phases in a woman’s life. A pregnant woman in labour is already enduring immense physical pain and emotional stress. It is therefore deeply concerning that many patients are allegedly being forced to share a single bed with another patient due to overcrowding and inadequate facilities. Such conditions not only compromise patient dignity but also raise serious concerns about healthcare standards and patient welfare.
Our mothers and sisters deserve the highest level of care, respect, and comfort during this critical period. No woman should be made to suffer additional hardship while seeking medical assistance at a government healthcare institution.
We respectfully appeal to Hon’ble Health Minister Sakina Itoo, who herself understands the challenges and sensitivities faced by women, to personally visit LD Hospital and assess the ground realities. We believe that her direct intervention can help identify the shortcomings and ensure immediate corrective measures.
JKAP urges the Health Department to:
Address the issue of overcrowding and bed shortages.
Strengthen infrastructure and patient care facilities.
Ensure dignity, comfort, and quality treatment for all pregnant women.
Increase manpower and resources wherever required.
The well-being of mothers is directly linked to the well-being of society. Ensuring safe, dignified, and accessible maternal healthcare must remain a top priority for the government.

SHO, Three Policemen Suspended Over Alleged Bid to Settle POCSO Case

JAMMU, June 6 (KNC): In a major disciplinary action, four police personnel, including a Station House Officer (SHO), have been suspended for their alleged involvement in attempting to broker a compromise in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Official sources said the action followed serious allegations that the officials tried to influence the course of the investigation by facilitating an out-of-court settlement in the sensitive case. Such compromises are not permissible under the provisions of the POCSO Act and are considered a serious breach of legal and professional obligations.

The suspended officials include the concerned SHO and three other policemen posted at the same police unit. Senior police authorities have ordered a departmental inquiry to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt at compromise and to determine whether any procedural violations were committed.

Police officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice in offences involving children, asserting that there would be zero tolerance towards any form of misconduct within the force. They maintained that strict action would be taken against any officer found guilty of dereliction of duty or abuse of authority.

The incident has attracted considerable attention due to the sensitive nature of POCSO cases, which require investigations to be conducted with transparency, fairness and accountability, without any scope for negotiated settlements.

Further investigation into the matter is in progress, and additional action may be initiated depending on the outcome of the departmental probe.(KNC)

A Decade After Approval, Anantnag's Scientific Waste Management Project Remains Stalled

Muneeb-Ul-Islam

Anantnag, June 6, KNT: Nearly ten years after land was identified for a scientific Solid Waste Management (SWM) facility in South Kashmir's Anantnag district, the project remains incomplete, forcing municipal waste to pile up and raising concerns about environmental degradation, public health and sanitation.

The proposed facility, planned at Urnhall-Batengo on around 70 to 80 kanals of land, was conceived in 2014 to scientifically process municipal waste generated by Anantnag and adjoining urban areas. The project, estimated to cost around ₹4 crore, was designed to handle approximately 115 metric tonnes of waste daily.

However, despite the passage of almost a decade, the facility has yet to become operational.

Residents say the delay has contributed to indiscriminate dumping of garbage at multiple locations, including roadsides, open spaces and areas close to water bodies.

The issue has assumed significance as Anantnag, often referred to as the "Land of Springs," is home to several important streams and water resources, including the Sandran, Brengi, Arpath and Lidder.

Locals fear that unmanaged waste is increasingly finding its way into watercourses, particularly during rainfall when garbage is washed downstream.

“The garbage ultimately reaches streams and springs. Water sources that once remained pristine are showing signs of pollution,” said local resident Sajad Ahmad Wani.

Apart from environmental concerns, residents say the growing volume of municipal waste has become a major sanitation challenge and poses risks to public health.

Many have questioned why a project announced years ago remains stuck despite repeated assurances from authorities.

When contacted, Executive Officer of Municipal Committee Anantnag, Mirza Aadil Beigh, acknowledged the delay and said pending No Objection Certificates (NOCs) had slowed progress.

“The project has been delayed due to certain pending NOCs. Once the required clearances are obtained, work will be initiated immediately,” he said.

Beigh added that some machinery required for the facility has already been procured and expressed hope that work would begin once approvals are secured.

People, meanwhile, have urged the government to expedite the clearance process and complete the long-awaited project, arguing that a scientific waste management system is essential to protect Anantnag's environment, water resources and public health. [KNT]
