Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir – In a region often making headlines for conflict, a different kind of story is unfolding – one of innovation, perseverance, and the unwavering belief in the power of young minds. Salik Riyaz, a young student hailing from Sopore, has captured international attention by winning the prestigious Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award, at the World Leaders Summit, University of Oxford, for his groundbreaking initiative, Zoonigia. With no intention of seeking the spotlight, Salik’s pursuit of ideas has led to the creation of Zoonigia, set out to shed light and revolutionize how learners engage with frontier sciences, technology, and creativity, especially in the uncharted territory of the underprivileged regions. What started as a small idea has grown into a vibrant movement. Through hands-on workshops, innovative projects, and global collaborations, Zoonigia is empowering students to dream beyond the confines of their textbooks. From astronomy to artificial intelligence, Salik’s initiatives bridge ancient knowledge with cutting-edge science, inspiring hundreds to explore uncharted possibilities.
The path, however, was far from smooth. Salik faced skepticism and ridicule from those who deemed his ambitions “impractical” or urged him to pursue a “safe career.” His hyponasal voice, a result of a nose ailment, became a target for mockery. Nearly everyone around him tried to pull him back, but he decided to combat hard and rise. Opportunities were rare and resources were insufficient. It was difficult at times to even find a venue to share his thoughts.
Nevertheless, Salik persisted because he thought the region had potential, ability, and tales the world should hear. The man's dedication evoked him to pursue a wide range of subjects, from the wisdom of philosophy to the vastness of astronomy, the intricacies of artificial intelligence, and the ingenuity of grassroots innovation.
He worked on endeavours that linked ancient knowledge with modern scientific advances, partnered with worldwide space research programs, like IASC Pan STARRS in partnership with NASA, and empowered hundreds of students to go beyond textbooks.
Today, the Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award stands as a powerful testament to Salik's resilience and visionary leadership. This national recognition not only honours his individual perseverance but also serves as a beacon of inspiration, an example of what is achievable if one refuses to give up.
Speaking with him, a humble Salik emphasized that this milestone is just the beginning. "Zoonigia was never about me," he stated. "It's about the individuals who will build, explore, and dream for the world we're yet to see."
