Free Cochlear Implant Surgeries Offered in Mumbai with Rotary Support
Mumbai, Sept 26, CNS: In a major boost to healthcare services, KEM Hospital in Parel has introduced an advanced neuro-intervention machine capable of treating certain cases of paralysis within a critical 24-hour window. Officials said the facility, inaugurated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is the first of its kind in India and is expected to transform stroke management and neurosurgical care.
According to experts, the technology functions on principles similar to angioplasty, where blocked vessels in the brain can be opened using minimally invasive methods. Doctors explained that in cases of ischemic stroke, where timely intervention is crucial, the new system allows specialists to remove clots and restore blood flow, thereby offering patients a chance at faster recovery if treated promptly.
Renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Nitin Dange, associated with KEM Hospital, has been credited with pioneering the use of this machine. Internationally, such machines are available only at a limited number of centers, making the Mumbai facility an important milestone in public healthcare. Officials emphasized that patient outcomes depend heavily on immediate medical response, and urged families to bring stroke patients to the hospital within hours of onset.
In another development, healthcare access for children born with severe hearing impairment has been strengthened through cochlear implant programs in the city. SRCC Hospital in Mumbai is offering free cochlear implant surgeries with support from Rotary Club of Bombay Worli, District 3141. While such procedures generally cost between 10 and 12 lakh rupees, the initiative ensures that underprivileged children can undergo surgery at no expense.
Medical experts explained that cochlear implants have proven effective in restoring hearing in children who are deaf from birth, allowing them to develop speech and communication skills when provided early in life. Families seeking assistance have been advised to contact authorized Rotary Clubs or the hospital directly for enrollment under the scheme.
Authorities underscored that both initiatives reflect a growing focus on advanced technology and inclusive healthcare in Mumbai. The BMC’s inauguration of the stroke treatment machine at KEM Hospital marks a significant addition to India’s medical infrastructure, while the cochlear implant program highlights the role of civic groups in bridging healthcare gaps for vulnerable children.
