– The Food Safety team of Srinagar conducted inspections across Habkadal, Babdamb, and Munawarabad, focusing on street vendors as part of an ongoing public health enforcement drive. These inspections aimed to ensure food quality and safety, while also educating vendors on essential hygiene practices.
As part of a broader sensitization initiative, the team emphasized:
Hand Hygiene: Vendors were advised to wash hands regularly, especially before handling food and after contact with waste or raw materials.
Safe Storage: Guidance was provided on maintaining proper storage temperatures and preventing cross-contamination.
Contamination Prevention: Vendors were urged to use clean utensils, cover food, and maintain cleanliness in and around their stalls, using potable water for food preparation and cleaning.
This dual approach of enforcement and education is intended to build a grassroots culture of food safety. The initiative is being carried out under the directives of Dr. Syed Abid Rashid Shah, Administrative Secretary of the Health and Medical Education Department, and Commissioner of Food Safety, Smita Sethi. Officials stated that further such drives will follow, and non-compliance will attract strict action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
