Turkmenistan Denies Entry to Stranded Indian Students from Iran; Over 600 Await Evacuation

Srinagar, June 19

Over 600 Indian students, most of them from Jammu and Kashmir, remain stranded in Mashhad, Iran, after Turkmenistan authorities reportedly denied them entry through the border despite prior arrangements.

According to reports, the group of students had been relocated by the Indian Embassy from Qom to Mashhad—a distance of over 1000 kilometers—by bus, in the first phase of their expected evacuation to India via Turkmenistan.

“This was the first batch of students expected to return home through the Turkmenistan route. But today, we were shocked to learn that Turkmenistan did not allow them to cross the border,” said a concerned parent from Srinagar.

The students, many of whom are studying in Tehran, have reportedly been in constant transit for the last six days. Parents say they are exhausted, sleep-deprived, and under mental stress.

“Our children have not slept properly for days. They’ve been moving from one city to another. Now they are again stuck in Mashhad. This is not safe for them,” said another parent.

With growing anxiety among families, several parents have appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to intervene without delay and ensure the safe evacuation of their children.

“We request the MEA and Government of India to take this issue seriously. Both students and parents are in a state of panic,” said parents.

The Indian Embassy in Iran is reportedly coordinating efforts on the ground, but no official statement has yet been made on the denial of entry by Turkmenistan.
