Mian Altaf Reviews Mughal Road Tunnel Progress, Urges BRO to Fast-Track Work
SRINAGAR: National Conference Member of Parliament from Anantnag-Rajouri, Mian Altaf Ahmad, on Wednesday met the Chief Engineer of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Kashmir to review the progress on the Mughal Road tunnel project, which has been handed over to the BRO for ex*****on.
According to a statement, the BRO Chief Engineer briefed the MP that the process for the construction of the tunnel was “progressing swiftly and moving in the right direction.” Mian Altaf, while appreciating the update, urged the BRO to further accelerate the pace of work to ensure the tunnel is completed at the earliest.
The tunnel will provide a year-round alternative to the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, which frequently remains closed due to landslides, as witnessed recently,” Mian Altaf said. He added that the tunnel would also boost economic and tourism activity in the region by enabling greater movement of people and goods.
Highlighting the importance of the project for the farming community, Mian Altaf said apple growers and traders would particularly benefit from the tunnel. “It will provide a reliable alternative for transporting fruit to outside markets, reducing delays, post-harvest losses, and dependence on the often-blocked national highway,” he noted.
The MP also pressed upon the BRO Chief Engineer to upgrade and expedite maintenance on the crucial Shopian–Peer ki Galli stretch for smoother travel until the tunnel is completed.
The Mughal Road tunnel, cleared by the central government at an estimated cost of around Rs 3,830 crore, is regarded as a critical alternative to NH-44, which remains prone to weather-induced disruptions. The construction responsibility has now been formally entrusted to the BRO.
