Devprayag, located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, is the official origin point of the holy river Ganga. It is here that two mighty rivers—the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda—merge to form one of the most sacred and significant rivers in the world: the Ganga. While the Bhagirathi originates from the Gangotri Glacier and the Alaknanda from the Satopanth Glacier near Badrinath, it is only after their confluence at Devprayag that the river is officially named the Ganga.
What makes this place unique is not just its spiritual significance, but also its geographical importance. The Alaknanda contributes a larger volume of water, yet the name “Ganga” is attributed only after it meets the Bhagirathi, reflecting both natural and cultural perspectives.
