April 1912. The RMS Titanic was the jewel of the White Star Line. The White Star Line was owned by the International Mercantile Marine Company (IMM). The IMM was financed and controlled by J.P. Morgan.
He effectively owned the Titanic. Morgan was scheduled to sail on the maiden voyage. He had a private luxury suite reserved. At the very last minute, he cancelled his ticket, citing business in France. A handful of his closest associates also cancelled their tickets just before departure.
Who stayed on board? John Jacob Astor IV, Benjamin Guggenheim, and Isidor Straus (owner of Macy's). At the time, they were three of the wealthiest and most influential men in America.
