Mindanao, Philippines, June 8, 2026 | newz o’clock

At least 19 people have been confirmed dead and 129 others injured after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of General Santos City in Mindanao, the Philippines’ main southern island, at 7:37 a.m. local time on Monday.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, increasing its destructive impact across the region. Strong shaking was felt in several provinces, damaging buildings, roads, and other infrastructure.

The earthquake prompted tsunami warnings across the Philippines and several neighbouring countries, including Indonesia and Japan. Authorities ordered residents in coastal areas to move to higher ground as a precaution. Most tsunami warnings have since been lifted after assessments showed the threat had diminished.

Emergency response teams have been deployed across affected areas, while hospitals continue to treat the injured. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in communities impacted by the disaster.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he had “directed all relevant government agencies to act immediately” and urged residents to follow evacuation orders and safety advisories issued by local authorities.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions, making the country highly vulnerable to major earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Tawang, June 7, 2026 | newz o’clock

An estimated magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near Punakha, Bhutan, at around 11:06 PM IST on Sunday, sending tremors across Bhutan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and parts of China. Residents in several districts of Arunachal Pradesh also reported feeling the shaking. At the time of reporting, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The tremor has once again highlighted Arunachal Pradesh’s position as one of India’s most earthquake-prone states. The entire state falls under Seismic Zone V, the highest earthquake-risk category under India’s seismic zoning system. This means Arunachal is highly vulnerable to strong and potentially destructive earthquakes due to its location in the active Himalayan tectonic belt.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in the region. Earlier this year, multiple tremors were recorded in and around Arunachal Pradesh, including in West Kameng and other districts. The Himalayan region experiences frequent seismic activity as the Indian Plate continues to collide with the Eurasian Plate.

The most devastating earthquake linked to the region remains the 1950 Assam–Tibet Earthquake, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded on land, with a magnitude of about 8.6. The disaster caused widespread destruction across Northeast India and Tibet and remains a stark reminder of the region’s seismic risk.

Experts have long warned that the Eastern Himalayas, including Arunachal Pradesh, possess the potential for major earthquakes. While today’s quake was moderate, it serves as another reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness, resilient infrastructure, and public awareness across the state.
