The unrest was sparked by escalating demands for full statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

The protests intensified after two elderly women, who had been on a hunger strike to press for these demands, collapsed and were hospitalized, igniting city-wide anger. Youth and student organizations called for a complete shutdown in Leh, leading to clashes with police. Authorities used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowds.

The agitation was being led by the Ladakh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), advocating for greater autonomy since Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019. Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a 15-day hunger strike along with 15 others, ended his strike amid intense clashes. He told supporters that he does not want any more trouble and urged protesters to remain peaceful while calling on the government to fulfill Ladakh’s statehood demand.

The central government has scheduled talks with Ladakhi leaders on October 6 to address these pressing issues.

Tawang, 23 Sept | newz o’clock: The Being Monpa Foundation (BMF) has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh over the non-joining of 11 teachers posted at various schools across Tawang district.

In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, Tenzin Dhargey, President of BMF, expressed concern that despite official posting orders, the teachers have not reported for duty, causing disruptions in the education system and severely affecting students’ learning.

The letter highlights that teachers were transferred from different districts, including East Siang, Papum Pare, and Pasighat, but have not joined schools such as GHSS Jang, GHSS Lumla, and GSS Town, Tawang. The foundation has requested urgent intervention to ensure compliance with government directives on teacher deployment.

“If the teachers do not join within the specified time, we will be forced to take democratic measures,” BMF warned in the letter.

The foundation has urged authorities to act promptly to avoid further escalation and ensure the smooth functioning of schools across the district.

BOMDILA, Sept 22 | newz o’clock: The Deputy Commissioner (DC)-cum-District Magistrate of West Kameng, Akriti Sagar, IAS, has declared the 24-hour bandh called by the All West Kameng District Students’ Union (AWKDSU) as “illegal and unauthorized.” The bandh was announced to protest against the shortage of teachers in the district, as 11 out of 12 recently transferred teachers have not yet joined their posts.

The bandh was scheduled from 5 AM on September 23 to 5 AM on September 24, 2025. In an official order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the DC stated that bandh calls severely obstruct normal life, disrupt essential services, and often result in incidents of violence, damage to property, and violation of citizens’ fundamental rights such as free movement, trade, and education.

The order strictly prohibits:
• Enforcing the bandh through coercion or road blockades
• Forcing closure of shops, schools, government offices, or transport services
• Damaging public or private property in the name of protest
• Obstructing emergency and essential services including ambulances, fire services, police, and medical services

The DC warned that any violation will invite strict legal action and civil liability for damages. The Superintendent of Police, West Kameng District, has been directed to ensure enforcement of the order.

Under this project, a total of 280 free coaching seats will be provided to deserving candidates, of which 10 seats have been allocated to Tawang District. ATDSU has been tasked with recommending the top 10 candidates from the district for this opportunity.

In a significant turn of events, AAP Tawang President Lobsang Gyatso, popularly known as Anna Lama, released a public apology video today on mon Tawang vigilance news channel, retracting his earlier allegations against Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering and other individuals involved in the ongoing land allotment controversy.

Gyatso admitted that calling MLA Namgey Tsering a “Land Mafia” and “Dalal” during the Mon Tawang Vigilance gathering on September 18 was a mistake made in haste. He also apologised to Dorjee Norbu, Lham Tashi, and Ngawang Tenzin, acknowledging that his remarks had caused defamation and misunderstanding.

Importantly, Gyatso announced that his previously planned indefinite hunger strike which was scheduled to begin on September 22 has been postponed until further notice. He said that after speaking with the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Tawang, he came to know that developments are taking place in the land allotment process, and therefore, it no longer makes sense to hold a hunger strike at this moment.

This apology and postponement of the hunger strike mark a major shift in the ongoing debate over land allotment in Tawang, with many observers believing it could help ease tensions and open the door for constructive dialogue within the community.

The All West Kameng District Students’ Union (AWKDSU) has declared a 24-hour bandh from 5 AM on September 23 to 5 AM on September 24, 2025, across West Kameng district.

AWKDSU General Secretary Dorjee Tashi, along with Bandh Call Issue Chairman-cum-Education Secretary Dorjee Wangchu Jari, stated that the bandh has been called as only one teacher, Zaenam Tana at Namshu out of 12 recently transferred teachers has joined duty.

The union highlighted that it had earlier deferred the bandh until September 17 at the request of four MLAs, who had assured resolution of the matter. However, with no progress made, AWKDSU has decided to go ahead with the protest.

Their key demand is the immediate joining of the remaining teachers for crucial posts, including PGT Science, TGT English, TGT History, PRT, TGT Geography, and PGT English, to ensure students’ education is not disrupted.

Essential services such as paramilitary forces, police, medical emergencies, students appearing for exams, milk vans, and media have been exempted from the bandh. Transport, markets, and offices across the district are expected to remain shut.

AWKDSU has warned that it may escalate its agitation if the authorities fail to resolve the matter.

Monpa Cultural Troupe from Tawang Reaches Leh for Ladakh Festival 2025

Leh, September 20, 2025 || newz o’clock : 16 member Monpa cultural troupe representing MIPA has reached Leh to take part in the prestigious Ladakh Festival 2025, scheduled from September 21 to 24. The team, led by District Art & Culture Officer Tawang, Sonam Tsering, received a warm welcome from the Department of Tourism at Leh Airport.

After their arrival, the troupe paid a courtesy visit to Hon’ble Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of Leh, Advocate Tashi Gyalson, at his secretariat. The meeting was marked by an exchange of mementos and souvenirs, symbolizing friendship and cultural bonding between Tawang and Ladakh.

During the festival, the Monpa artists will present their rich folk dances and traditions, proudly showcasing Tawang’s vibrant cultural heritage. This cultural exchange initiative has been envisioned and encouraged by Tawang’s Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Namgyal Angmo, IAS, to strengthen people-to-people ties and celebrate shared traditions.

In a significant development, social activist and Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) District President for Tawang, Lobsang Gyatso, has announced that he will undertake an indefinite hunger strike starting September 22, 2025. The protest will be held at Massang Dung Reimey (Old Market Square) in Tawang from 9 AM onwards.

Gyatso’s decision comes in response to what he calls “bias and illegal land allotment practices” in the district. In an official intimation to the Deputy Commissioner of Tawang, he has put forth three key demands:
