Leh, Ladakh, 24 Sep | newz oโclock
A massive protest in Leh turned violent on Wednesday, with demonstrators setting fire to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office and clashing with police. The unrest was sparked by escalating demands for full statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The protests intensified after two elderly women, who had been on a hunger strike to press for these demands, collapsed and were hospitalized, igniting city-wide anger. Youth and student organizations called for a complete shutdown in Leh, leading to clashes with police. Authorities used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowds.
The agitation was being led by the Ladakh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), advocating for greater autonomy since Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019. Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a 15-day hunger strike along with 15 others, ended his strike amid intense clashes. He told supporters that he does not want any more trouble and urged protesters to remain peaceful while calling on the government to fulfill Ladakhโs statehood demand.
The central government has scheduled talks with Ladakhi leaders on October 6 to address these pressing issues.
