An 80-year-old retired engineer, Kumaraswamy, lost his life in a tragic elevator accident at the Dattatreya Swamy Temple in Vinayaka Nagar, Shivamogga, Karnataka, on Sunday morning. According to police, Kumaraswamy had left his home around 7:30 am after informing his wife, Lalitha Kumaraswamy, that he would first undergo a blood test at the Rotary Blood Bank before visiting the temple.

Investigators said the accident occurred when Kumaraswamy pressed the elevator button to travel to an upper floor. Believing the lift had arrived, he reportedly opened the manual outer door and stepped into the shaft. However, the elevator cabin was on a higher floor. As it descended, it struck him and pinned him beneath the lift, causing fatal injuries.

Personnel from the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services rescued him from the shaft and rushed him to McGann District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Following a complaint filed by his wife at the Jayanagar Police Station, police registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR).

Authorities have inspected the elevator system to determine whether a mechanical failure or safety lapse allowed the manual door to open while the lift was not present. The body was sent for post-mortem before being handed over to the family. Shivamogga police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor has achieved a major milestone in his political career by winning the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar, marking his first-ever electoral victory. Contesting on a Jan Suraaj Party ticket, Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha in a constituency long regarded as a BJP bastion. The result is being seen as one of the biggest upsets in recent Bihar politics and gives Kishor his first elected office after years of influencing elections from behind the scenes.

Following his victory, Kishor thanked the voters of Bankipur and said the mandate reflected the people's desire for change. He pledged to transform the constituency into a model assembly segment within the next two years and asserted that Bihar needs a capable and progressive leadership focused on employment, education, and reducing migration. He also promised that residents would begin seeing visible improvements in the constituency within the next three months.

The victory is significant not only because it marks Kishor's successful transition from election strategist to elected representative, but also because it breaks the BJP's long-standing dominance in Bankipur. Political observers believe the outcome could reshape Bihar's political landscape ahead of future elections and strengthen the Jan Suraaj Party's position as an emerging political force in the state.

A school van carrying children was allegedly attacked in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, after a group of youths dressed as Kanwariyas reportedly pelted stones at the vehicle, shattering its windows and leaving the children inside terrified. Videos of the damaged van quickly spread across social media, prompting widespread concern and demands for strict action against those responsible.

According to initial reports, the attackers fled the scene immediately after the incident. Police reached the spot soon afterward, confirmed that no children or staff were injured, and began an investigation. Officials said CCTV footage from the area is being examined to identify those involved and determine the exact sequence of events.

The incident gained further attention after journalist Piyush Rai shared videos online. Fact-checker Mohammed Zubair described the visuals as "shocking" and questioned why school children were travelling during the massive Kanwar Yatra procession. Local residents also condemned the incident, with one person stating, "We are also Hindus. It doesn't mean we will harass others."

The incident has reignited concerns over student safety, crowd management, and traffic arrangements during the annual Kanwar Yatra, which attracts millions of devotees across northern India. Authorities are expected to take action once those responsible are identified.

Meanwhile, some social media users have questioned whether the incident was an isolated criminal act by individuals dressed as Kanwariyas or an attempt to malign the Kanwar Yatra. As of now, there is no official evidence establishing the motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.

A woman has been arrested in Madhya Pradesh's Singrauli district for allegedly murdering her nephew, with whom she was reportedly in a relationship for nearly two years, police said. The accused, identified as Priya Gupta, is alleged to have strangled 28-year-old Satyaprakash Gupta with a scarf following a dispute over marriage.

The case came to light on July 31 after the victim was found unconscious inside a Maruti Suzuki S-Presso parked in the Morwa police station area. His brother alerted police after discovering him in the driver's seat. Satyaprakash was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police registered a murder case and launched an investigation.

During the probe, investigators examined CCTV footage, call records, and other evidence, which allegedly established Priya Gupta's involvement. Police said the victim had been pressuring her to marry him, leading to frequent arguments. On the night of the incident, the two allegedly met, and the argument escalated before Priya allegedly strangled him to death. She later allegedly called the victim's brother and told him he was inside the car in an attempt to divert suspicion. She has been arrested, produced before a court, and further investigation is underway.

A chilling murder case has come to light in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district, where a man was arrested for allegedly killing his wife and staging her death as a road accident to claim an insurance payout of ₹44 lakh.

According to police, the accused, identified as Amar Singh, allegedly assaulted his wife, Rita, with sticks and clubs, causing fatal injuries. Investigators said he then allegedly ran a car over her body to make the incident appear as a fatal road accident and strengthen an insurance claim.

During the investigation, police reportedly found inconsistencies in Amar Singh's statements, prompting a deeper probe. A post-mortem examination revealed multiple external injuries along with extensive internal damage that investigators said was inconsistent with a simple road accident, leading police to suspect murder.

Police have arrested Amar Singh along with three other accused in connection with the case. Officials said further investigation is underway to determine the role of each accused and gather additional evidence. The incident has shocked the local community and highlighted the lengths to which some individuals may allegedly go for financial gain.

Police said the Baleno had reportedly been rented by a 19-year-old acquaintance, and investigators are examining how the minor gained access to the vehicle. CCTV footage of the incident captured the sequence of events and is being reviewed as part of the investigation.
