Fiona is one of the strongest storms to hit eastern Canada. A state of emergency was declared on Saturday, September 24, in towns on Cape Breton and the southern coast of Newfoundland after the tropical storm.

The storm knocked out power to more than 500,000 homes and businesses along the coast. As of 11 a.m. local time, about 80 percent of homes and businesses in Nova Scotia. Reportedly in the dark.
Maritime Electric reported 82,000 of its 86,000 customers were without power in P E I, and NB Power reported 54,000 New Brunswick customers were without power, most of them in Moncton, Shediac and Sackville.
