The Kerala government on Sunday banned religious festivals, sports tournaments, other mass gatherings in places such as malls, parks and beaches, while planning a state lockdown.

The order follows a religious procession of hundreds of people in the capital Thiruvananthapuram district on Saturday. It resulted in the district administration arresting 28 people, under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897. The state has seen a surge in cases of Covid-19, now at 52, with over 50,000 under observation.

Seven districts including capital Thiruvananthapuram in the state will completely be locked down till March 31 to check the spread of Coronavirus. The decision was announced by the Center on Sunday after Cabinet Secretary reviewed Covid-19 status with Chief Secretaries of states. Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kasaragod and Kannur are the districts which will be going for a shutdown from Monday.

Kerala on Sunday confirmed 15 more patients, taking the total number of cases in the state to 67. Three people out of the 67 have recovered. Kerala now has the second highest number of cases in India, after Maharashtra.

Out of the new cases, two are from Ernakulam district, two from Malappuram, two from Kozhikode, four from Kannur and five from Kasargode, said Kerala's health department in a statement.

Kochi, which had been lagging in the implementation of Smart City Mission projects, has finally improved its ranking. In the Smart City ranking published by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Wednesday, the city ranked 21 out of 100 cities selected under Smart Cities Mission. The India travel ban was further extended to arriving international passengers, saying that it would not allow entry to even Indian passport holders residing in the United Kingdom, Turkey, and whole of Europe until the end of March.

“Travel of passengers from member countries of the European Union, the European free trade association, Turkey and the United Kingdom to India is prohibited with effect from March 18, 2020. No airline shall board passengers from these nations to India with effect from March 18, 2020. No airline shall board passengers from these nations to India with effect from 1200 GMT on March 18, 2020. The airline shall enforce this at the port of initial departure.
