K. S. Chithra, born Krishnan Nair Shantakumari Chithra on 27 July 1963 in Thiruvananthapuram, is one of India’s most celebrated playback singers and a Carnatic vocalist. She debuted in 1979, and across five decades has recorded over 25,000 songs in more than a dozen Indian and even foreign languages like Latin and Arabic .
She has collaborated with iconic composers like A. R. Rahman, Ilaiyaraaja, and M. M. Keeravani, earning titles such as the Golden Voice of India (Royal Albert Hall, 2001) and Melody Queen of Indian Cinema (2016) . Her accolades include 6 National Film Awards, 10 Filmfare Awards South, and 43 state awards across eight Indian states. She received Padma Shri in 2005 and Padma Bhushan in 2021 . One of her iconic songs, “Kannalane/Kehna Hi Kya” from Bombay (1995), features in The Guardian’s 1000 Songs Everyone Must Hear Before You Die list .
Recently, she made headlines amid criticism for urging hymn chanting during the Ayodhya Ram Temple consecration—but also received broad support from political leaders . As of July 2025, fellow judges and music peers like Vidhu Prathap and Sithara Krishnakumar praised her as a lasting inspiration on her 62nd birthday .
