U-Turn After Victory? Vijay Gupta Denies ‘Switzerland’ Remark, Sparks Credibility Row

Tinsukia. Guwahati Central’s newly elected MLA Vijay Kumar Gupta is now facing a serious credibility question — did he say it, or is he denying it now?

During the election campaign, statements attributed to Gupta about developing Guwahati on the lines of Switzerland, Shimla, and Shillong went viral and grabbed massive attention.

But now, after a landslide victory, Gupta is rejecting it outright.

Speaking to the media, he said — “I never mentioned Shillong or Switzerland. Show me the clip first, then I will respond.”

That sharp denial has now sparked a fresh controversy.

Is this a case of words being twisted during the campaign — or a convenient post-win U-turn?

Meanwhile, the numbers tell a clear story.

Gupta secured over 1 lakh votes, defeating AJP’s Kunki Choudhury by a massive margin of more than 61,000 votes.

The contest was seen as a battle between experience and a young ‘Gen Z’ challenger — but in the end, experience dominated.

However, the bigger question remains —

If the statement was never made, why did it trend so widely during the campaign?

BJP-led NDA secures third straight term; twin Blow: Gogoi Leaders Lose, Akhil Gogoi holds on

📍 The BJP-led NDA stormed back to power in Assam with a record 101/126 seats, securing a third consecutive term. The BJP alone, for the first time crossed the majority mark on it's own and clinched 82 seats—well above the majority mark—while allies AGP and BPF added 10 seats each, sealing a dominant mandate, INC 19 seats, Raijor Dal, AIUDF 2 seats each and AITC gets 1 seat.

Tinsukia. The BJP-led NDA has delivered a landslide verdict in Assam, clinching 102 out of 126 seats and returning to power for a third straight term in emphatic fashion.

The BJP alone powered ahead with 82 seats—comfortably above the majority mark—while allies AGP and BPF chipped in with 10 seats each, cementing a commanding mandate across the state.

In contrast, the Congress-led alliance faltered badly, managing just 19 seats—its worst performance since 2016. Among its five partners, only Raijor Dal could open its account. Taking responsibility for the debacle, Assam in-charge Bhanwar Jitendra Singh stepped down.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who retained Jalukbari for a sixth consecutive term, thanked voters and struck a confident note: the mandate, he said, reflects trust across key constituencies and a promise to deliver on commitments.

The rout extended to top opposition faces—State Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi lost Jorhat by over 23,000 votes, while ally leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi also went down, underlining the scale of the NDA wave.
