Khonsa, Oct 21: A massive fire broke out at Khonsa Market in Tirap District around 11:30 PM on October 20, reportedly triggered by firecrackers during Diwali celebrations. The blaze rapidly engulfed multiple shops, causing panic among residents and business owners.
Deputy Commissioner Tirap, Techu Aran, along with ADC Khonsa Namneet Singh, IAS, coordinated an immediate response with the Fire Brigade, 44 Assam Rifles, 36 Bn CRPF, SDRF personnel, and local volunteers. Their swift action contained the fire and prevented further spread. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Initial assessments indicate that 9 shops were completely gutted while 12 sustained partial damage.
Local MLA Wanglam Sawin, accompanied by DC Aran, ADC Singh, DDMO Emily Tingkhatra, Fire Officer SI Emne Ngomdir, SDRF ASI Yumto Pulong, ZPM Tediap Hallang, BJP District President Lankham Wangsu, and other officials visited the site on October 21. Expressing deep concern, Sawin assured that relief and compensation matters would be taken up with higher authorities after a detailed assessment. He also stressed the need to curb illegal electricity connections and announced that meter boxes would soon be installed in all households and commercial establishments.
DC Tirap Techu Aran highlighted that despite prior directives mandating fire extinguishers in every shop, compliance was low. He urged all shop owners to install extinguishers and directed bazaar encroachers to clear roadside sheds to allow unhindered access for emergency vehicles. He confirmed that the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) would provide relief assistance to affected shop owners.
Khonsa Bazar Welfare Committee (KBWC) President Asen Wangsu and senior resident Wangpong Tangjang lauded the efforts of DC Tirap, the Fire Brigade, Tirap Police, Assam Rifles, CRPF, SDRF, and local volunteers for their courage and prompt action in containing the fire.
