🌏Super Typhoon 'Yagi' lashed out China's Hainan Province bringing heavy rains, causing widespread power outage, and forcing a million to leave their homes (Please see the below-linked report by "The Guardian"). 🌏Hainan Province accounts for nearly 45% of the total natural rubber output in China.
🌏Natural rubber prices spiked yesterday (Sep 6) afternoon in the Shanghai Futures Exchange as speculative funds longed their position in anticipation of the potential supply disruptions arising from 'Yagi'. The most active natural rubber contract closed 360 yuan higher (+2.2%) in the day-time trading in Shanghai Exchange yesterday. However, the market has undergone a correction by losing 155 yuan in the night-trading session.
🌏In the JPX Osaka, the most active RSS-3 contract spiked 10.2 yen (+2.9%) in the Friday night trading session.

Yagi registers as the world’s second-most powerful tropical cyclone this year and has caused power outages in more than 800,000 homes

🌏This article was drafted 8 months ago, in December 2023, and published through the "Tyre Trends", January 2024. When this was drafted in Dec 2024, the price of RSS 4 at Kottayam was ruling around Rupees 150 per kg only. Still, the article concluded with a clear statement that a tight global supply would be taking the prices up in the new year (2024).
🌏Interestingly, the prices have now spiked much beyond the levels expected 8 months ago. RSS4 price at Kottayam is poised to cross over its historic high in the next few days, and grow beyond Rupees 250 per kg. Globally, the prices averaged considerably higher in the first seven months of this year compared with the same period in the previous year. 🌏Natural rubber is a commodity for which the supply dynamics could be predicted well ahead, with a reasonable degree of reliability.

Today's (30 May) "The Hindu Business Line" outlines the current trends in natural rubber market. It also carries inputs from WhatNext Rubber Media International.
The abnormally low supply of primary forms of natural rubber across Southeast Asia is attributed to several factors. They include:

(1) Rain-induced harvesting disruptions in major producing countries.
(2) Extended impact of this year's abnormal summer on the yield potential of hevea.
(3) Lagged impact on latex yield from the fungal leaf-spot disease that has infected an estimated total extent of 0.6 million hectares of rubber trees in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines and Sri Lanka over the past six years.
(4) Fall in the yield caused by the poor maintenance of holdings over the past six years coinciding with the unattractive prices.
(5) Shrinkage/stagnation of mature rubber area in the major Southeast Asian producing countries due to the abnormally low planting activity after 2016.
(6) Large-scale conversion of rubber holdings for the cultivation of oil palm and durian, particularly in Indonesia and Thailand, over the past three years.
