Demand for Transparent Investigation in Rama Kankonkar Assault Case: Allegations of a Senior Minister’s Involvement

The recent assault on prominent activist Rama Kankonkar has stirred a wave of controversy and calls for justice in Goa. While the police have made strides by arresting a key accused, Zenito Cardozo, questions linger over the thoroughness and impartiality of the ongoing investigation. Carlos Alvares Ferreira, a vocal political figure and activist, has openly criticized the probe, alleging that the true mastermind behind the attack is a sitting cabinet minister, whom he terms the ‘Godfather General.’ This claim has intensified public demand for a transparent and exhaustive inquiry to restore faith in law enforcement and governance.

The Incident

On a seemingly ordinary afternoon, Rama Kankonkar and his friend Soiru Velip were at a restaurant in Caranzalem when six assailants launched a brutal attack on the activist. CCTV evidence shows the assailants, armed with a suspected cycle chain, tearing Kankonkar’s shirt, assaulting him, dragging him onto the road, and even humiliating him by rubbing cow dung on his face. The assailants brazenly documented their act, photographing Kankonkar before fleeing the scene on two-wheelers. Despite the attack occurring in a busy area with numerous onlookers, no one intervened, reportedly scared due to the attackers’ blatant aggression and weaponry.

Kankonkar was rushed to Goa Medical College for treatment, and the incident shocked the public, igniting discussions about the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

Police Action and Arrests

The North Goa Police, led by SP Rahul Gupta, responded by arresting five accused individuals the same day, all history-sheets, including Anthony Nadar, Francis Nadar, Minguel Araujo, Manish Hadfadkar, and Suresh Naik. Days later, the police nabbed Zenito Cardozo, a known criminal with multiple past cases, identified as a significant figure orchestrating the attack.

SP Gupta stated that although Zenito was the prime accused, the motive remained uncertain, suggesting a previous enmity might have led to the violent act. The investigation continues, with police asking the public’s patience and assuring further arrests if necessary.

Allegations Against a Senior Minister

Amid these developments, Carlos Alvares Ferreira has raised serious concerns about the investigation’s integrity. Ferreira argues that focusing solely on Zenito as the mastermind is a diversion tactic, shielding the ‘Godfather General’—a nickname for a reportedly powerful sitting cabinet minister suspected of ordering the attack. Ferreira refers to the minister as part of the ruling party’s ‘goonda’ elements, implicating a broader systemic problem within the government.

In press statements and public appearances, Ferreira condemned the selective narrative crafted by police officials, particularly criticizing SP Rahul Gupta’s claim that the attack was just the result of personal enmity between Kankonkar and Zenito. He insists that such a stance ignores underlying political vendettas and protects influential figures who operate with impunity.

Demand for Accountability

Ferreira has called upon Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to take decisive action by removing ‘goonda’ ministers and MLAs from the cabinet, warning that failure to address these elements would only exacerbate lawlessness and promote a ‘gang war’ culture in Goa.

He highlighted the gravity of the situation by drawing an analogy with historical authoritarian regimes, recalling how opposition voices were violently suppressed during Hitler’s era. Ferreira warned that Goa, and India at large, risk descending into a state where freedom of speech is curtailed through intimidation by agencies like the Enforcement Directorate, CBI, and income tax authorities, targeting dissenters.

“There is an unwritten emergency prevailing across the country and in our state,” Ferreira stated. “People who dare to speak against the ruling government face harassment and violence. The assault on Rama Kankonkar is a chilling reminder of these times.”

Political and Public Reaction

The narrative surrounding the assault and subsequent investigations has polarized public opinion and political discourse. Opposition parties and civil rights activists have intensified calls for an independent judicial inquiry to unravel the full truth behind the attack.

Meanwhile, the ruling government's response has been calm but firm, with Chief Minister Sawant condemning the attack and urging the police to bring the culprits to justice. However, critics claim that decisive action against accused political figures remains elusive.

Public protests and social media campaigns have emerged, demanding justice for Kankonkar and transparency in the investigation. Citizens express concern over growing criminal influences in politics and fear for Goa’s democratic fabric.

Law and Order in Goa

This case also reignites broader concerns about the state of law and order in Goa. Citizens and activists argue that political interference in legal proceedings undermines the rule of law and promotes a culture where powerful individuals act above accountability.

The involvement of alleged ‘goonda’ ministers and MLAs, as indicated by critics like Ferreira, calls for urgent systemic reforms. Law enforcement agencies are urged to operate autonomously without political pressure, ensuring safety and justice for all citizens.

Conclusion

The Rama Kankonkar assault case symbolizes a critical test for Goa’s governance and justice systems. With high-stakes political intrigue and urgent calls for truth, the investigation’s outcome will significantly impact public trust.

Ferreira’s allegations and demands highlight the necessity of accountability and strong institutions to safeguard democracy and law enforcement integrity. The Chief Minister and police must act transparently, ensuring no individual, regardless of political stature, is above the law.

As this story continues to unfold, the eyes of Goa and the nation remain fixed on the quest for justice, transparency, and the preservation of democratic values.

Power Outage Sparks Anger in Volvonem-Tivim: Business Owners Slam Electricity Department

Volvonem (Tivim), September 11, 2025, 3:00pm

Frustration is boiling over in Volvonem, Tivim, as an unannounced power outage that began early Thursday morning continues into the late afternoon, leaving hundreds of residents and business owners in darkness. Despite assurances that electricity supply would be restored by 3:00 pm, the outage has stretched on with no clarity from the authorities, sparking outrage among locals who accuse the electricity department of poor planning and disregard for working-day schedules.

The outage has hit particularly hard at the B&F Dr. Carmino Lobo Edifice in Volvonem, the commercial hub that houses multiple offices, shops, and professional establishments. On a busy working day, entrepreneurs and small businesses depending on electricity for operations have faced significant losses and disruptions. With computers, electronic equipment, and billing systems at a complete halt, business owners are demanding accountability from the state electricity department engineers, who they believe have handled the matter with shocking indifference.

Many locals suspect the outage is part of a planned maintenance shutdown, but point out that no prior notice was served to residents or businesses. Community members argue that even if it was a maintenance exercise, scheduling it on a working weekday without consultation with stakeholders amounts to negligence. “If they want to do repairs or improvements, why not choose a Sunday, or a day when the business community is prepared in advance? Instead, this sudden shock leaves us counting our losses,” said one shop owner at the Carmino Lobo Edifice.

The lack of communication has added insult to injury. Angry residents note that while they were given an unofficial promise of restoration by 3:00 pm, the hours continue to drag on without current or updates. “We are running businesses here, not sitting at home idle. We need power for offices, shops, internet, billing, basic lights and fans. How can anyone manage like this when they cut off current without warning?” asked another aggrieved businessman.

The anger spilled over on the streets, with locals demanding immediate intervention by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, Tivim MLA Nilkant Halarnkar, and the local sarpanch. Business owners argue that such issues cannot be brushed aside as routine disruptions, but pose a serious question on governance and accountability. Residents recalled that similar sudden shutdowns have hit Tivim in the past, and alleged that repeated complaints have been ignored by the officials concerned.

There is also growing perception on the ground that the electricity department engineers are operating with apathy, disregarding the real impact on livelihoods. “What kind of development model is this, where entrepreneurs are being put down by the very system that is supposed to support them?” questioned a frustrated Tivim shopkeeper.

With temperatures soaring and businesses suffering, the community is demanding that CM Dr. Sawant and MLA Halarnkar intervene immediately and enforce a stricter protocol for power shutdowns. Locals want advance public notices, planned scheduling on non-working days, and accountability if restoration deadlines are not met.

Until then, Volvonem remains in the dark — literally and figuratively — waiting for those in power to finally switch the lights back on.

Goan Filmmaker Sainath S. Uskaikar Wins Big at CIFF 2025 in Delhi
Delhi.

Goa’s own rising filmmaker Sainath S. Uskaikar, an alumnus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), has brought pride to the state by winning the Best Short Film award at the Celebrating India Film Festival (CIFF) 2025 in Delhi.

Uskaikar’s Marathi short film Guntata Hriday He (Entangled) was honoured for its evocative storytelling and artistic depth. The award was presented to him by the Honourable Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during the festival’s grand closing ceremony at the NCUI Auditorium.

The three-day festival, held from August 8 to 10, showcased over 50 films from across the country and featured vibrant discussions, masterclasses, and cultural events. Uskaikar’s win stood out not only for its cinematic merit but also as a moment of celebration for Goa’s growing presence in the national film scene.

Speaking after the win, Sainath expressed gratitude to his mentors, crew, and the people of Goa who have consistently supported his creative journey. “This recognition motivates me to continue telling stories rooted in emotion, culture, and human connections,” he said.

The film’s success at CIFF 2025 further underlines the talent emerging from Goa beyond the state’s famed beaches and tourism. Goa has, in recent years, seen a steady rise in young filmmakers gaining national and international recognition, and Uskaikar’s achievement adds another feather in the state’s cinematic cap.

Festival Chief Mukesh Gupta described CIFF as “a people’s celebration of cinema” and applauded filmmakers like Uskaikar for keeping cultural storytelling alive.

With this award, Sainath S. Uskaikar cements his position as one of Goa’s promising creative voices and exemplifies the potential of Goan storytelling on the national stage.

🚨 SHOCKING REALITY: Goa’s Youth Unaware of Private Company Registration! Even MBA/BBA Graduates Stay Clueless & Uninterested 🚨

In a startling revelation, it has come to light that a majority of Goa's youth — including those with business degrees like BBA and MBA — are unaware of the basic process of private company registration. Even more concerning is their lack of interest in joining startups or becoming second directors in promising new ventures.

While the startup wave is booming across India, Goa seems to be missing the bus — not because of lack of ideas or opportunity, but because of apathy, ignorance, and fear of responsibility.

🔥 Key Highlights:

Many youth don’t know that a Private Limited Company can be registered in just 7 days online via MCA.

Few understand the roles of Directors, Authorized Capital, or compliance basics.

Most prefer chasing jobs rather than building or joining startups — even when offered co-founder positions.

Entrepreneurial spirit is missing where it should be burning brightest.

It’s time for a massive awareness drive in Goa’s colleges, business schools, and communities. If Goa truly wants to become the creative, tech, and entertainment hub it has the potential to be, its youth must rise — not just to dream, but to register, build, and lead.

💡 Goa doesn’t just need tourists. It needs entrepreneurs.
