Witness the historic coronation of Maharaja Kerala Varma of Cochin in 1946, a pivotal moment that propelled Cochin State towards democracy and unification. Maharaja Kerala Varma played a crucial role in introducing a democratic form of governance and accelerating Cochin's accession to the Indian Union. His leadership led to the enhancement of the Cochin Legislative Council's powers, paving the way for responsible government. The formation of the Cochin State Praja Mandal in 1941 further propelled the agitation for responsible government, and the Quit India Movement in 1942 revived political activities in Cochin. Maharaja Kerala Varma's call for the unification of Kerala garnered widespread support, envisioning a united Kerala that respected the ancient ruling houses while progressing as a cohesive entity. His legacy as Aikya Keralam Thampuran continues to inspire, reminding us of the transformative impact he had on Cochin's governance and the pursuit of a united Kerala.

The Maharaja of Travancore Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma and The Maharaja of Cochin Sir Sri Rajarshi Rama Varma at the Coronation Durbar in Delhi.
They were close friends albeit during a tense period in the Travancore-Cochin relation, with major issues of contention including the Cochin State Railway which passes through part of Travancore.
Lord Curzon described them in a letter to the queen that many Indian Maharajahs were frivolous but there are two great Maharajah's that of Travancore and Cochin. He described them as "Having the most conservative instincts, but the most liberal views" the polar opposite of what most Maharajah's were.

Faraway follows Biju Ibrahim on his journey to document the 39 communities that live, work and rub shoulders with each in Mattancherry. Of course, there are places that are more diverse than this, but what makes the diversity in Mattancherry is that all the communities share a tiny strip of land by the sea and live almost shoulder to shoulder with each other while proudly holding on to their identities.

In the director Naveed Mulki's words- "There is this beautiful idea of India, where there is room for anyone and everyone. An idea where this beautiful culture absorbs every influence, where it waits with open arms to visitors, once distant and longingly listens for the knock on its door. A place where languages that move like rivers find shores of new curious tongues. A place where we are all in it together, irrespective of the songs we sing, or the music we dance to. I have had the privilege to travel to the lengths of my beautiful country, slowly and surely. This idea has always been a beautiful under current in my every thought. Yet, there is no place that I have been to, where this idea comes to life as much as it does in Mattancherry. This dream of India has been alive and well here for over 500 years. This is the dream we now share with all of you as well"

700 years ago, a massive flood in the Periyar river is said to have destroyed the ancient port of Muziris just north of Cochin. Kerala rose from the ashes and a new trading port emerged in Cochin, that saw a new era of prosperity. The rise and fall of this region continued through the Colonial age and in the early 1900s Cochin once again made a gigantic leap towards modernity with the arrival of the railways and the modernisation of the Cochin harbour. This editorial from ‘The Hindu’ from 23rd August 2018 (Exactly a 100 years ago!) talks of the major strides that the princely state of Cochin achieved in the Socio-Economic spheres during that period.
As we find our footing after major floods that have ravaged the state, our history tells us that Kerala will rise again from this disaster and a ‘Nava Keralam’, a new Kerala will emerge.
