900 students take part as 2nd District-Level Inter-School Games begin in Tura

Tura, August 31: The 2nd District-Level Inter-School Games 2026 got underway at the Hawakhana Indoor Hall in Tura on Monday, bringing together around 900 students from 42 schools across Selsella, Gambegre and Tura.

The event, organised by the District Sports Office, West Garo Hills, aims to provide young athletes with a wider platform to compete, gain exposure and develop their sporting abilities beyond the school level.

The inaugural programme was attended by Shri Vibhor Aggarwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, as the Chief Guest, while Shri John F. Kharshiing, Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, attended as the Special Guest, along with sports officials and other dignitaries.

Competitions are being conducted in eight sporting disciplines—Volleyball, Basketball, Taekwondo, Swimming, Kabaddi, Badminton, Athletics and Table Tennis—across the Under-14, Under-15 and Under-17 age categories. The tournament will culminate with the final matches on September 3.

Addressing the participants, Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal highlighted the importance of competitive sporting events in helping students assess their abilities, gain experience and develop a stronger competitive spirit. With Meghalaya set to host the National Games in the coming months, he encouraged the young athletes to set ambitious goals and aspire to compete at national and international levels.

Aggarwal also said the National Games would provide Meghalaya’s young sportspersons with valuable opportunities to witness and interact with leading athletes from across the country. Such exposure, he noted, could inspire students to pursue sports seriously and emerge as athletes of the future.

Speaking at the inaugural programme, John F. Kharshiing appreciated the strong participation from schools and acknowledged the presence of district-level sports association representatives. He pointed to the changes in Meghalaya’s sports sector since 2019, particularly following the introduction of the Meghalaya Sports Policy 2019, which was notified after a historic Cabinet meeting held in Tura in December 2019.

Kharshiing said the policy provides a structured pathway for athletes from the school level towards state-level competition, while also offering provisions such as cash incentives and scholarships. He further highlighted the revival of the Meghalaya Games in 2020 and encouraged students to use available sporting opportunities and facilities to develop their potential.

He also spoke about the High Performance Programme and the support available for developing athletes, urging the young participants to put in their maximum effort and remain committed to their sporting goals. He expressed hope that competitions such as the district-level inter-school games would help identify and nurture future champions from the region.

Meanwhile, Shri Saljagring M. Marak, Assistant Director, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya, said the initiative was designed to bring students from different schools onto a common competitive platform. He noted that while sporting opportunities were previously concentrated largely within individual schools, inter-school competitions now allow students to test themselves against a broader pool of talent.

According to Marak, such exposure is important not only for identifying promising athletes but also for building confidence, competitive experience and a stronger sporting culture among school students.

Regional Awareness camp on National Food Security Act 2013 held at Dadenggre

Dadenggre, August 28, 2026: A Day-long Awareness camp on the theme " National Food Security Act 2013, a Sustainable Initiative for achieving Zero hunger was held at Multi Facility Centre Dadenggre C&RD Block, Dadenggre on 28th August 2026.

Addressing the gathering the Chairman, Meghalaya State Food Commission D P Wahlang, IAS (Retd) highlighted the role and importance of organizing the awareness camp adding that Food Security is the right of each and every person and each one should know their rights and entitlements. Mentioning the responsibilities of the State Food Commission, he said that the Commission takes care of the Food grains distributed by the Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs department, implementation of PM Poshan and Midday Meal Scheme under Education department and distribution of nourishing food items for children including pregnant and lactating mothers of the area. Stating that the beneficiaries are not deprived of these rights, he said that these three departments should work in collaboration to ensure food security to all citizens so that no one should stay hungry, nobody should be deprived of their rights and nobody should die of starvation.
Further, urging the beneficiaries to avail the facilities provided by the Government free of cost to the people, he stressed that all the deserving beneficiaries should avail these opportunities while those undeserving beneficiaries receiving these facilities should be deleted from the list. He further highlighted the functions of the Vigilance Committee in the villages and that complaints can be lodged to them in a proper manner. Mentioning that the Commission intends to take the administration closer to the people and therefore, the camp has been organized here in the Sub-Division and informed that next year they would organize these programs in the Blocks thereby making service delivery system reach the last mile.

Referring to his inspection of schools, Anganwadi Centres, etc, the day before, the Chairman pointed out several gaps in service delivery system and have requested the district administration and the concerned departments to rectify the issues especially supply of water and fan for the Anganwadi Centres in the area.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson, State Social Audit Council, T Lyngwa, Member, Meghalaya State Food Commission Dr. M Tyngkan, Member Secretary, Meghalaya State Food Commission, Israel Ingty, IAS, (Retd) Deputy Commissioner (Supply), West Garo Hills Tura Vibhor Agarwal were among others who spoke during the awareness Programme.

Sub- Inspector, Tura Gamchi Marak presented a power point presentation on the Best practices of Smart Public Distribution System in West Garo Hills while the Sub-Inspector, Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs ( FCS & CA), Dadenggre made a short presentation on National Food Security Act 2013 and the rural and urban parameters for Priority Household beneficiaries. The Education department also highlighted the overview and objectives of PM Poshan being implemented under the department in a power point presentation.

During the program, Pavitra Sangma, Anganwadi from Bikongre Anganwadi Centre and Lucy Marak, Cook from Puri Government Secondary school Dadenggre were felicitated for their dedication and commitment towards their line of duty while five Fair Price Shop dealers were also felicitated for achieving 100 percent e-KYC in their respective Fair Price Shops namely Rimnang Marak, Sonowar Ali, Abdul Sater, Hasmut Ali and Masidhur Islam under Dadenggre Sub-Division.

Sub-Divisional Officer, Dadenggre Civil Sub-Division , C Awasthi, Inspector (Supply), Dadenggre Naseng Marak, Sub Inspector, Dadenggre Salchra Sangma, Fair Price Shop Dealer, Grenath Sangma were among others who spoke on the occasion.

Chief Minister inaugurates office building of Excise department

Shillong, 28th Aug 2026: Chief Minister, Shri Conrad K Sangma, today inaugurated the new office building of the Excise department at Lower Lachaumiere, in a program held at the office premises. Also present during the inauguration were Hon’ble Minister, Excise, Shri Brening A Sangma, Chief Secretary, Dr Shakil Ahammad and senior officers and staff of the Excise department.

Speaking during the occasion, Chief Minister, Shri Conrad K Sangma, said that it was a day of celebration for the department and the government to inaugurate the building for an office that had been functioning from temporary structures for over 50 years. “It gives me joy and satisfaction to inaugurate this building which was been a long-standing demand of the department,” he said.

He also added that the department has been contributing significantly to the revenue of the state also informing that the new building is part of a broader infrastructure improvement initiative and highlighted the administrative infrastructure improvements made over the past eight years that included school renovations, police stations and outpost, block offices, PHCs, CHCs and sub centres.

On revenue growth and reforms in the Excise department the Chief Minister observed that the department has seen a significant increase in revenue from about Rs 180 Crs eight years ago to over Rs 500 Crs during the present times. “A major decision has been made to combine the excise and VAT which is expected to further increase revenue,” he said adding that in August 2026 the Cabinet approved the folding of VAT on alcoholic liquor into the Excise Duty regime, by amending Section 44 and Schedule V of the Meghalaya Value Added Tax Act.

He also informed that the focus is on implementing reforms that are sustainable and do not disrupt the existing ecosystem ensuring that all stakeholders are taken care of. He also hoped that the department will soon reach over Rs 1000 Crs in revenue highlighting the potential for future growth.

The Chief Minister also elaborated the impact of the excise revenue on social programs informing that the revenue generated from the department is used to fund various social welfare programs including construction of schools, hospitals and safe motherhood programs. He encouraged the officers and staff of the department not to undermine the impact of their work emphasizing that the revenue generated by the department helps save lives and educate children.

He concluded his speech by urging the officials to see the new building as their second home and work with full commitment and dedication to achieve the department’s goals and targets.

The project has successfully been developed now at a total project cost of ₹14.55 Crs. The building has been designed to bring the operating arms of the department into a single campus. The new building will house the laboratory, the Enforcement Wing, the Integrated Excise Management System and the office of the Commissioner within one building removing the loss of time and information that occurs when a regulatory office operates from dispersed premises. The single campus will also improve the interface for licensees and citizens, who have until now had to approach different locations for connected transactions.

All Hat, No Cattle’: Vacant Secondary, Higher Secondary Posts Raise Concern Over Meghalaya’s Education System

Tura, August 28, 2026: The reported shortage of teachers at the secondary and higher secondary levels across Meghalaya has raised fresh questions over the state government’s recruitment policy and its repeated assertion that education remains a top priority.

According to concerns raised by education stakeholders, a significant number of teaching posts are lying vacant in schools across the Khasi and Garo Hills. They alleged that the vacancy figures presented by the government do not accurately reflect the situation on the ground, with several posts reportedly remaining unfilled and institutions depending on contractual teachers to meet their requirements.

The stakeholders questioned why regular recruitment to teaching posts at the secondary and higher secondary levels has remained slow and inconsistent, even as recruitment to various other government posts, including LDA positions, is conducted periodically.

They argued that the shortage of teachers directly affects the functioning and academic performance of schools. “In the absence of adequate teachers, expecting good results from schools is not justified,” they said.

Contractual teachers left in uncertainty

Of particular concern is the situation of educators who have reportedly served schools at the secondary and higher secondary levels on a contractual basis for more than a decade.

Despite years of service, many of these teachers are said to remain without a clear pathway to regular employment. Some are also reportedly approaching or crossing the prescribed age limit for regular recruitment, leaving them uncertain about their professional future.

Stakeholders questioned whether the government has adequately considered the experience and contribution of such teachers while formulating its recruitment policy.

They also questioned the apparent emphasis on large-scale recruitment at the Lower Primary level while vacancies at the secondary and higher secondary stages continue to persist.

‘Where is the priority for education?’

The issue has prompted sharp questions over the government’s claim that education is among its top priorities.

Stakeholders asked why the government has not been able to ensure regular and timely recruitment for secondary and higher secondary schools if strengthening education is genuinely a priority.

They alleged that the prolonged recruitment gap has not only affected students but has also created uncertainty among educators who have dedicated several years to teaching on contractual appointments.

Questions have also been raised over government spending on large festivals and other celebrations, with critics arguing that greater attention and resources should be directed towards strengthening the education system and filling vacant teaching posts.

The critics accused the Meghalaya MDA government of failing to match its stated commitments with action, arguing that “education as a topmost priority” should translate into adequate teachers, timely recruitment and secure career opportunities for educators.

The controversy has now put the spotlight on the actual number of vacant teaching posts in secondary and higher secondary schools and whether the government will undertake a comprehensive verification of vacancies and initiate a regular recruitment process.

For many contractual educators, the demand is not merely for employment but for recognition of years of service and a fair opportunity to compete for regular appointments before they become ineligible due to age.
