They marched an entire community across the mountains and burned this church to the ground in 1784. Fifteen years later, the survivors came home — and rebuilt on the very same ground. Today, Our Lady of Miracles Cathedral in Kallianpur is the mother church of the entire Udupi Diocese. From ashes to a Cathedral. This is the story of Milar Saibin. 🕊️✨

They returned from captivity with nothing but a one-foot wooden statue... and a prayer. Today, that prayer stands as the St. Lawrence Basilica — where over a million people of every faith gather each year. Some places don’t just hold history. They hold hope. 🕯️

He was a Navy Commander. Then he became a priest. Then he gave a forgotten village its first church. Today, thousands cross oceans to pray here 🌊⛪ This is Stella Maris Church, Kalmady.

500 years ago, a Hindu king gave Christians land in Shirva. 🕊️
Then Tipu Sultan burned the church to the ground. The people were dragged away in chains for 15 long years.
But when they returned… a Hindu family gifted them new land. A second church rose. Then a third. And in 1910… two priests tore down their own churches… so one greater church could rise in their place.
This is Our Lady of Health, Shirva. Saude Saibinichi Igorz. A church born from promises kept. Where nobody asks your religion at the gate. 💛

In a village called Thottam — which means ‘garden’ — a Hindu landowner gave 2.5 acres of his own land… for a Catholic church. That was 1927.
On 17 March 1933, on that very land, St Anne’s Church was born — and for nearly 100 years, it has been the heartbeat of this village.
And in February 2026, the original chapel where it all began… was renovated and blessed. The beginning… meeting the legacy. 🙏❤️
A reminder from coastal Karnataka: faith doesn’t have to divide. Sometimes… it builds bridges that last a hundred years.

Before there was a church in Moodubelle, there was one priest and a promise. This is the story of how two churches became one — and how a town was born around faith. 🕊️ St Lawrence Church, Belle | Diocese of Udupi

Born from a farewell in 1837. Rescued by one man’s sacrifice. Reborn nearly 200 years later. 🤍⛪ Mount Rosary Church, Kallianpur is more than stone and glass — from a thatched roof to a home for 1,200 faithful, it’s a mother to an entire community. And every Good Friday, they still carry the same cross their ancestors did. This is faith that refused to fade.

In a town with 365 temples and 3 mosques... stands one church with a story 2,000 years in the making. 🕊️ Torn down, marched into captivity, and rebuilt from rubble — St Peter’s Church, Barkur is a Gothic masterpiece born from pure faith. This is Part [X] of my journey through the churches of Udupi. Which story should I tell next? 👇

Over 150 years ago, the people of Udyavar had nowhere to pray. 🙏 So two men — Domingo Pereira and Louis Lobo — walked nearly a week on foot to Goa, just to petition the Archbishop. In 1866, their first Mass was said in a thatched shed on the sand.
It collapsed. But it rose again — rebuilt by Ven. Msgr Raymond Mascarenhas, now on the path to sainthood. And when a grand new church was built in 2016, the parish kept his original altar alive inside it — blessed that day by a Bishop, a Hindu Swamiji, and a Muslim leader, side by side. ⛪✨
