Tangkhul Naga Refutes False Allegations Regarding Incident at Mongkot Chepu

“Let us remember that we are but custodians of this community, heirs to the sacrifices and wisdom of our forefathers and trustees for the future of our younger generation. What we preserve, nurture, and pass on will define not only our legacy but also their inheritance.” - Tangkhul Naga Longnao, Delhi.

The Tangkhul Naga Longnao, Delhi (TNLD) has issued a letter for peace, justice, unity, and constructive dialogue in the aftermath of the recent violent incidents in Hongbei village and the subsequent unrest in Ukhrul town. The organization expressed profound sorrow and regret over the loss of lives, acknowledging the deep impact on the community’s conscience. It also paid tribute to the deceased, recognizing their contributions, and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

The Tangkhul Nagas in the Capital has stressed the imperative need for justice that is not only impartial and transparent but also firmly rooted in truth. The organization emphasized that accountability, pursued with utmost integrity, is crucial to restoring and sustaining lasting peace and trust within the community.

The organization has further expressed considerable concern and dismay over the recent incident involving the heckling of the President of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL).

“Such conduct not only diminishes the dignity and sanctity of our institutions but also signals a disquieting deviation from the values of mutual respect, constructive dialogue, and communal unity that have guided our society thus far,” the letter stated.

While, the Hongbei Village incident is a trigger point that exposed accumulated tensions, Dr. Pamreihor Khashimwo writes that the incident and its aftermath could serve as a turning point, a catalyst for introspection and transformation. However, for this to happen, there must be a willingness across all sections of society to engage in honest self-examination.

The recent incident surrounding the Hongbei Village and the subsequent public insurrection in Ukhrul Town have forced an urgent and uncomfortable question upon Tangkhul society: are we witnessing a crisis of leadership, or is this a deeper, more pervasive collective failure? While it is tempting to assign blame to particular leaders, organisations, or institutions, a closer and more critical examination reveals a far more complex and systemic breakdown, one that implicates not just those in positions of authority but the broader social fabric itself.

The Hongbei Village incident should not be mistaken for the origin of the crisis; rather, it is a trigger point that exposed accumulated tensions. For years, grievances have simmered beneath the surface, ranging from governance overreach to erosion of moral authority. The incident acted as a spark in a landscape already saturated with discontent. The intensity of the public reaction demonstrates that the issue is systemic, not episodic.

In an effort to de-escalate tensions and restore normalcy amid recent violence, Tangkhul Naga legislators Ram Muivah and Leishiyo Keishing convened a key meeting with the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) at its headquarters in Wino Bazar, Ukhrul.

The meeting follows reports of violence in Shangkai and Sharkaphung, along with escalating tensions along the Imphal–Ukhrul highway, particularly between Litan and Shangkai, raising serious safety concerns for residents and commuters.

Addressing the media, Ram Muivah stated that the purpose of the visit was to engage directly with the apex Tangkhul body to better understand the situation on the ground and listen to public grievances.

“We are deeply concerned about the violence in Shangkai and the tension along the highway. Our visit was to hear the concerns of Tangkhul Naga Long and explore ways to restore peace. The discussion was cordial, and we received valuable suggestions, which will be conveyed to the Chief Minister,” he said.

Describing the situation as a “complete breakdown of law and order,” the TNL accused the state government of remaining silent while civilians live under constant fear. They demanded immediate action to restore peace and punish those responsible.

The Tangkhul apex body also questioned the Chief Minister’s meeting with the Kuki-Zo Council, pointing out that the Manipur govt had labelled the group illegitimate in Dec 2024. “What’s changed?” they asked.

Additionally, the TNL slammed the govt for excluding Tangkhul Naga reps from Ukhrul conflict talks, calling it “deliberate and undemocratic” – and saying it silences their community’s voice.

The statement also highlighted Kuki militants’ alleged taxation along NH-202, saying they’re demanding taxes from commuters despite govt assurances of safe passage. This shows the govt isn’t serious about enforcing order or keeping its word.

According to local sources, the pair had informed local volunteers of their urgent need for food. Unaware of the imminent danger and given the proximity of the farm to their home, they were allowed to go. Moments later, heavy gunfire erupted, with bullets reportedly directed toward their location, leaving them stranded and helpless.

“They could not move. The firing was intense and continuous. They survived by lying flat against the ground,” a local resident recounted.

After enduring nearly three hours of terror, troops from the 4 Mahar Regiment, stationed nearby, successfully carried out a rescue operation at around 5:50 PM, bringing the mother and son to safety.

The incident highlights the worsening situation in Sinakeithei, where residents say sustained violence since March 7 has pushed the village to the brink of a humanitarian collapse. Food shortages have become severe, with local stores nearly empty and household vegetable sources rapidly depleting.

“We are surviving with a basic food supply,” a villager told EKHON. “Some aid has come from neighboring villages and private groups, but it is not enough.”
