The Angami Gazetted Officers’ Krotho (AGOK) held its ‘Nounyü Rüchü’ on the theme “The ardent need to change the mindset and perspective of educated unemployed youth towards self-reliance” at the NBCC Convention Centre, Kohima on August 22.

In his address, AGOK President, Neilasa Sopfü expressed concern over the existential threat posed by illegal migrants across the state, particularly in Kohima and Dimapur. He stated that the unemployment problem in Nagaland is directly or indirectly affected by illegal Bangladeshi immigrants (IBIs), who occupy jobs ranging from menial labour to entrepreneurship.
Highlighting facts and manuals, he noted that the population of illegal immigrants in Nagaland grew at an accelerated rate of 181.67% between 1991 and 2021, warning that Nagas may become a minority by 2051 if the trend continues.

He also stated that the other reason for economic drain is due to the activities of IBIs, in business or in joint ventures, and further reminded the effect of intermarriage between IBIs and Nagas and the adoption of the migrants.

NAGOK President, Er. Vipulhou Lhoungu, in his brief address, shared his struggles as a young engineer and credited his success to God’s blessings, quoting Proverbs 16:3: “Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” He urged educated unemployed youth to pursue training in various sectors and vocational skills such as painting, electrical work, and plumbing.

WAGOK President, Rokovisa Chase, spoke on India’s economic status, unemployment, the difference between private and government employees and the threats posed by IBIs. He encouraged the youth to shift focus toward private enterprise and self-reliance, noting that government employment has reached a stage of stagnancy.

The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has urged the state Government to immediately implement a Landlord–Tenant Registration System across Nagaland to safeguard the interests of both the public and the genuine business community.

CNCCI’s demand comes in line with the recent demand of Naga Students’ Federation for immediate implementation of a Landlord–Tenant Registration System in Nagaland.

In a statement, CNCCI chairman, Dr Khekugha Muru and general secretary, Avi Chase stated that on several occasions, anti-social and unscrupulous individuals, posing as businessmen, have taken advantage of the absence of such a system. Many have rented residential properties under false pretenses and engaged in illegal and unethical activities, thereby tarnishing the image of the business community at large, it added.

Citing multiple instances where individuals have taken shops and commercial premises on rent, claiming to establish genuine businesses, the CNCCI said after gaining the trust of consumers, they abscond with large sums of money collected as advance payments for goods and services. These fraudulent acts have, in some cases, involved losses running into multiple crores, it disclosed.

The CNCCI said bringing such culprits to justice has proven difficult as victims are often left without proper documentation, proof of identity, or details of the fraudsters, adding this lack of information makes it extremely challenging for victims to even lodge formal complaints with the authorities.
Such repeated incidents not only damage the credibility of Nagaland’s business community but also cause irreparable financial and emotional harm to innocent citizens.

The Chumoukedima District Village Councils’ Association (CDVCA), comprising all village councils in the district, has demanded urgent review and amendment of the Ceasefire Ground Rules (CFGR), citing their rampant misuse by underground factions and the resulting threats to public safety and law and order.

In a representation to the Chairman of the Ceasefire Monitoring Group (CFMG), the Association expressed concerned that designated camps of factions under ceasefire agreements with the Government of India have been “frequently misused” and turned into safe havens for criminals, and the law-enforcing agencies are ostensibly barred from entering these premises.

According to CDVCA, these so-called Ceasefire Supervisory Offices of the factions, often located in the heart of populated areas, have often been used for illegal detention of civilians abducted for ransom or extortion. It said a wrong perception has been harboured by the factions that these premises are inviolable by the law enforcing agencies and that their illegal activities are covered by the Ceasefire Ground Rules.

It demanded amendments to Ceasefire Ground Rules so that the CFMB/CFMG can authorize/enable the police to raid or conduct searches in these premises upon receipt of verified information that these places are harbouring criminals or are being used as illegal detention centres.

It also demanded to shift Ceasefire Supervisory Officers of the factions away from civilian areas and put in place a full-proof mechanism to prevent misuse of the designated offices in any manner and ensure that the Ceasefire Ground Rules are strictly adhered to in letter and spirit.
The Association further expressed alarm over the “public display of arms” by functionaries of the factions, who often move about with armed bodyguards carrying sophisticated weapons.

This practice, it said, not only creates a fear psychosis among the general public but also emboldens cadres to carry out illegal activities with impunity, giving them a false sense of invincibility. CDVCA urged that card holders and their bodyguards must conceal their weapons to prevent intimidation of civilians.

To mark World Photography Day 2025, the Mokokchung Photography Club (MPC) organized a special street photography under the global theme “My Favourite Photo” on
August 19, bringing together local photographers and enthusiasts to capture the essence of everyday life in the town.

Armed with their cameras, members of the club set out across various locations in Mokokchung town to document candid moments of people, streets, and surroundings, celebrating the art of visual storytelling. The initiative aimed to highlight the importance of photography not just as a hobby or profession, but as a powerful medium to preserve culture, narrate stories, and inspire perspectives.

Speaking on the occasion, MPC general secretary Moa Among Pongen said that World Photography Day is an opportunity to “freeze moments in time that might otherwise be forgotten” and to encourage young photographers to take up the craft with passion and responsibility.

The street photography activity also served as an interactive platform for members to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and engage with the community. Passersby were seen showing keen interest, some even posing for spontaneous portraits.

According to Jonathan Ao, senior member of MPC, “Through such initiatives, the Mokokchung Photography Club hopes to create greater awareness about the role of photography in society while nurturing local talents who can represent Mokokchung and Nagaland through their lenses on larger platforms.”

The 5 Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP) has expressed disappointment at the clarification given by the Nagaland Chief Secretary that sought from the CSOs, “credible and qualified person” from the communities they represent to be a member in the proposed Reservation Review Commission and not office bearers of the CSO.

In a press release, the CoRRP said, “If this is the outcome of State Cabinet meeting that took place yesterday, it is a direct insult to the collective intelligence of 5 tribes as our demand in the first place was for total exclusion of CSOs from the proposed Commission, whether be it office bearers or their nominee.”

The mentioned that they stand by their 9th August Resolution which was reproduced in their representation submitted to the State Government.

“We expect the State Government to give them positive response instead of attempting to delay and deny the legitimate demands raised in their representation,” it stated.

Meanwhile, it said their non-participation in all State Government functions and meetings will continue until further orders.

India Test captain Shubman Gill has made his return to the T20I format and has been appointed vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE.

Gill played his last T20I in July 2024 against Sri Lanka, and his return to the shortest format hints at India's plans to unveil him as an all-format player after his leadership elevation on the England tour. Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the side in the T20Is.

The other notable inclusions in the squad were pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who both return to the T20I side after last year's T20 World Cup title in Barbados.

Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the standbys for India's Asia Cup squad, said chief selector Ajit Agarkar in the press conference at BCCI headquarters.

Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Sanju Samson, Harsh*t Rana and Rinku Singh have retained their place in the squad that featured in the five-match T20I series against England earlier this year.

The eight-team Asia Cup T20I tournament will be staged in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from September 9 to 28. Defending champions India are placed in Group ‘A’ alongside Pakistan, Oman and the UAE.

The Men in Blue will start their campaign against the UAE on September 10 before the blockbuster clash against archrivals Pakistan on September 14.

India are scheduled to play 15 T20I games after the continental tournament in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February.

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), under the banner of the North East Students’ Organization (NESO), staged a sit-in protest at Naga Solidarity Park, Kohima, on Monday under the theme “Evict all illegal immigrants from Northeast.” The protest was part of NESO’s coordinated campaign across the region to draw urgent attention to what it termed as an existential threat posed by the unchecked influx of illegal immigrants.

Addressing the gathering, NESO State Coordinator and Chairman of the programme, Ejanthung Ngullie, highlighted the historical importance of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, introduced under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) of 1873. He reminded that the issue has been a long-standing concern for NSF, which had even set up the Inner Line Regulation Commission decades ago to pursue the matter.

Ngullie explained that the ILP was designed to regulate entry into the Northeast to protect indigenous communities, safeguard their culture and heritage, and maintain demographic stability. However, he lamented that ILP is enforced in only four Northeastern states, which has “drastically affected socio-economic and cultural structures.” He urged both the State and Central governments to take the ongoing NESO protests seriously and act decisively.

Stating that the Government of the day needs to ponder upon this situation, Ngullie urged the Central Government to take the ongoing NESO protests seriously and act decisively.

Reading out NESO’s charter of demands addressed to the State and Union governments, Ngullie emphasized on the implementation of strict measures for immediate eviction and deportation of illegal immigrants. The second demand was to seal the Indo Bangladesh border, third demand was to strengthen border control and monitor vulnerable areas by deploying security personnel and modern surveillance technology; fourth demand was to coordinate with neighboring states while implementing the policies of ILP to ensure that migrants are not just relocated but totally pushed out from Northeast.

17/08/2025

The Nagaland Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) 2016 batch teachers have expressed strong resentment over the State Government’s continued delay in implementing scale pay, despite the Supreme Court upholding the Guwahati High Court judgment in their favor.

At a press conference held at Commissioner’s Circuit House on August 16, the Association warned of launching phase-wise democratic agitations, including a pen-down strike, if their demands are not met by August 25.

President of the RMSA 2016 Batch Teachers’ Association, Imlitemjen, said the teachers had submitted representations as early as June 2025 but received no response. An ultimatum served on August 13 gave the Government seven working days to act, failing which the teachers would resort to agitation and may also boycott the Teachers’ Day celebration.

Reiterating their demand, Imlitemjen reminded that the Supreme Court on May 20, 2025, upheld the Guwahati High Court’s March 16, 2022 order in favor of RMSA teachers, directing implementation of scale pay. “It has been three months since the judgment, but the Government has yet to take any action,” he said.

Briefing on the background of the RMSA teachers, Imlitemjen explained that the recruitment process began with an advertisement on December 14, 2013, though the salary details were not mentioned. In April 2014, during the 37th Project Approval Board meeting, the Ministry of Education had asked the State Government to make necessary corrections in the advertisement, but no changes were made. Written examinations were held in June 2014, results declared later, followed by viva voce in August 2015. On November 2015, results were declared, and the teachers were appointed based on post creation approved by the Finance Department on June 9, 2015.
