Vice President elections: Telangana CM wants Guv Dattatreya as candidate

Telangana chief minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged the Centre to consider a leader from Telangana for the post of Vice President of India, calling it a long-overdue recognition of the state’s role in national politics.

Addressing the media at his official residence in Delhi on Wednesday, July 24, Revanth Reddy reacted to the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, calling it an unfortunate development. While choosing not to speculate on the reasons, he said the vacancy presents a chance to correct historical neglect.

He pointed out that M. Venkaiah Naidu, a Telugu-speaking leader who previously served as Vice President of India, was denied elevation to the post of President and instead sidelined. Similarly, Bandaru Dattatreya, a senior leader from the Backward Classes (BC) community and former Union Minister from Secunderabad, was appointed as a Governor instead of being considered for a higher role.-SD

Saudi Arabia announces $5bn in Syria investments

A Saudi delegation visiting Damascus on Wednesday announced investment and partnership deals valued at $5 billion to help rebuild war-battered Syria.

The delegation of some 150 investors and representatives of the Saudi public and private sectors, led by Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih, attended a forum in Damascus.

“The announced investments, valued at SR19 billion (about $5 billion), span vital and strategic sectors, including real estate, infrastructure, communications and IT, transportation and logistics, industry, tourism, energy, trade” and more, AFP reported citing a statement from the Investment Ministry.(AFP)

Fake embassy of 'Westarctica' busted in India: Mastermind behind the scam arrested

In a shocking development near India's capital, Delhi, authorities have dismantled a fake embassy operation in Ghaziabad, leading to the arrest of its alleged mastermind. The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) uncovered an elaborate setup complete with high-end cars sporting diplomatic number plates, fake diplomatic passports, morphed pictures with state leaders, and foreign currency, all serving as a front for a job racket and money laundering network.

Harsvardhan Jain, the alleged orchestrator, had rented a luxurious double-storeyed building in Ghaziabad's Kavi Nagar area. He presented it as the embassy of 'Westarctica,' a 'micronation' founded by a US Navy officer that is not recognised by any sovereign state and claims a portion of Antarctica. Jain allegedly expanded his fictitious diplomatic network, also claiming to represent other unrecognised entities such as Seborga, Poulvia, and Lodonia, portraying himself as their consul or ambassador.-GN
