ASSAM FLOODS & LANDSLIDES CLAIM 3 MORE LIVES, DEATH TOLL RISES TO 26

Floods and landslides in Assam have claimed three more lives, raising this year’s death toll to 26, officials said. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported 20 deaths from flooding and six from landslides.
On Sunday, three children drowned in floodwaters in Kamalpur, Kamrup district. Although water levels are receding, nearly 2.6 lakh people across 11 districts remain affected. Sribhumi is the worst-hit with over 1.6 lakh people impacted, followed by Hailakandi and Cachar.
Floodwaters have submerged 741 villages and 6,311 hectares of crops, severely damaging agriculture. More than 31,000 people are sheltering in 130 relief camps. In Kaziranga National Park, seven animals have died, while 31 were rescued, according to ASDMA.

RECORD RAINS TRIGGER DEVASTATING FLOODS & LANDSLIDES IN NORTHEAST INDIA

Parts of Northeast India have faced unprecedented rainfall over the past week, causing severe floods and landslides. As of June 5, 46 people have died across the region’s seven states, with many villages submerged and roads cut off.
Guwahati recorded its highest May rainfall ever at 111 mm between May 30-31, breaking earlier records from the same month. Silchar saw a record 415.8 mm in 24 hours on May 31, surpassing a 132-year-old record. Meghalaya’s Sohra and Mawsynram received over 470 mm, while Assam’s Tezpur and North Lakhimpur recorded over 150 mm in the same period.
Climate expert Rahul Mahanta linked this to unusually high sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal, along with atmospheric instability and a depression over Bangladesh and Meghalaya.
According to Assam’s disaster authority, over 2.37 lakh villages are affected, with more than 41,000 people in relief camps. Assam alone reported 21 deaths. Flood conditions in Manipur’s Imphal Valley have slightly improved, but 1.65 lakh people remain affected.

NPCC REACTS AGAINST ILLEGAL DEDUCTIONS OF MGNREGA FUNDS

The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has voiced strong concern over alleged unauthorized deductions from MGNREGA funds meant for rural beneficiaries. The issue surfaced after the Kacharigaon Phevima Village Council alleged that Rural Development (RD) Department officials have been routinely taking illegal “cuts” from welfare funds.
Calling it a sign of deep-rooted corruption, NPCC stated that this exploitation denies vulnerable communities their rightful entitlements. The party urged the state government and the Rural Development Minister to launch an immediate investigation and ensure strict action and accountability.
