The performance moved seamlessly into the much-loved Mohanam varnam “Ninnukori,” a staple of the music classroom but rarely heard on the concert platform. Rama Varma not only sang it in three speeds, including a playful tisra variation, but also offered the backstory of its composer Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar, whose nickname, meaning “insect” in Tamil, came from his swara flights reminiscent of a buzzing insect

Prince Rama Varma’s recent concert at Tripunithura combined popular and rare kritis with humour and lively audience interaction.

'For me and my colleagues and especially our students, who have been coming to Muzhikkulam every year for the last 17 years, each complete Kutiyattam performance is a life-changing event. A heartfelt tribute to Ratan Thiyam, visionary theatre director and founder of the Chorus Repertory Theatre, who redefined Indian theatre through his indigenous, ritual-infused aesthetic. From Chakravyuha to Uttar Priyadarshi, his works bridged myth and modernity, embodying protest, rootedness, and spiritual depth.

On July 12–13, the Kalikotta Palace in Tripunithura will resonate with the rhythm and grandeur of Kathakali—not in its conventional masculine register, but in a voice that has been steadily asserting itself for fifty years. Tripunithura Vanitha Kathakali Sangham, the country’s first all-women Kathakali troupe, is celebrating its golden jubilee, with a two- day programme, Suvarna Sushamam, marking a remarkable journey of quiet revolution and artistic commitment.
