A recent eye screening initiative in Sindh has revealed that 4 in 10 truck drivers suffer from poor eyesight, raising serious concerns about road safety. Medical teams examined over 5,000 drivers and found that 20% had serious conditions like cataracts and glaucoma, while 40% were deemed unfit to drive due to general vision impairment.

This lack of visual clarity has been directly linked to a surge in fatal road accidents, especially in Karachi’s Malir and West districts, where over 100 people lost their lives in just the first 45 days of 2025.

In response, the Sindh government has launched a crackdown on unfit vehicles and untrained drivers. New measures include mandatory eye screenings, installation of cameras and trackers, and stricter licensing protocols.

The federal cabinet of Pakistan has approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar through the government sector to address rising prices and ensure market stability. The decision, announced by the Ministry of National Food Security, aims to counter supply-demand imbalances and prevent artificial shortages.

All arrangements for the import have been finalized, with immediate implementation underway. Officials emphasized that this strategy differs from past subsidy-driven approaches and is based on actual market needs. The move follows a sharp increase in sugar prices, particularly in Karachi, where retail rates have reached Rs190–200 per kg.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Advisor Asim has stirred debate by stating that Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are better suited for ODI cricket, not T20s. His remarks came after both senior players were left out of the T20 squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh.

Asim emphasized that the current T20 team is built for modern, fast-paced cricket, and younger players like Salman Ali Agha are being given a chance to lead. The decision signals a shift in strategy, focusing on fresh talent and aggressive gameplay.

While Babar and Rizwan remain key figures in the ODI setup, their exclusion from the T20 side has sparked discussions about the future direction of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket.

The government has rolled out revised withholding tax rates for prize bond winnings and profits from debt/loan interest under the National Savings Schemes.

This is a significant move, especially for non-filers, who will now face substantially higher tax deductions. The aim? To strongly encourage individuals to register on the Federal Board of Revenue’s Active Taxpayers List (ATL) and formally join the tax system. For filers, the rate on prize bond winnings and debt interest is 15%, but for non-filers, it's a hefty 30% – double the amount!

This strategy is all about broadening the tax base and boosting revenue collection. If your annual profit on debt exceeds Rs. 5 million, normal business slab rates apply, going up to 45% for profits over Rs. 5.6 million.

These changes mean it's more crucial than ever for taxpayers to understand the implications for their financial planning. Becoming an active taxpayer offers clear financial benefits and contributes to a more transparent and robust financial infrastructure for Pakistan.
