2025 started off with a challenging beginning. From the devastating fires in LA to transitions in leadership, and a string of tragic airline crashes, it’s been a year so far that reminded us of how unpredictable life can be. After taking a much-needed pause to reflect and recharge, we’re back in full motion.

As we move forward, we want to take a moment to highlight some incredible community contributors who made a lasting impact in 2024. These individuals went above and beyond, making us all proud to be South Asian. There is no particular order to this list, as each person has played an equal role in shaping our collective story. So, let’s give a huge round of applause to these go-getters and changemakers! May they continue making strides!

2024 was the greatest catalyst in continuing to put South Asians on the map. Representation was at its peak as South Asians led the way through pageants, political campaigns, climate change, fashion, entertainment, and overall making a global impact. We applaud their stellar efforts and proudly say that they have truly influenced and inspired us!

We had an incredibly difficult time identifying our favorite top 50 coolest South Asians of 2024.

In every field, we had outstanding individuals doing phenomenal things. We have compiled a list of noteworthy individuals who have made a difference this past year and made people of South Asian origin proud.

This week has been all about inspiring women! It was lovely meeting Payal Kapadia, Director of Cannes Grand Prix winner for “All We Imagine As Light”

Payal is an Indian filmmaker. In 2017, her short film Afternoon Clouds was the only Indian film selected for the 70th Cannes Film Festival. In 2021, she won the Golden Eye award for best documentary film at the 74th Cannes Film Festival for her debut feature A Night of Knowing Nothing.

Now In 2024, Payal won the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her fiction feature debut “All We Imagine as Light!” The film premiered at the Festival in May and was the first film from India to compete in the main competition since 1994.

All We Imagine as Light is a drama film written and directed by Payal. The cast includes Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroon.

The movie releases Friday November 15 and is a must watch! So tell all your friends and support South Asian films and of course South Asian female filmmakers!

A beautiful evening celebrating ( ) as India’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. An honor to see such wonderful cinema being recognized.

Directed by the brilliant Kiran Rao , and produced by Rao, Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande. It stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan, and tells the story of two young newly-wed brides who get exchanged during a train ride to their husband’s homes.
