No, interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS hasn't 'changed color', scientist says

3I/ATLAS was first discovered in July. It made its closest pass to the sun on Oct. 30, and three sun-facing spacecraft collected images of the wanderer as it zoomed past our star. This imagery revealed that 3I/ATLAS underwent a "rapid brightening" that exceeds what is observed in most comets at similar distances to the sun. In a pre-print study of that imagery published on arXiv, scientists wrote that this new data shows 3I/ATLAS is "distinctly bluer than the sun" in contrast to "earlier observations showing the comet's dust to be red." Numerous media outlets jumped at the chance to declare the comet had "changed color" multiple times and, of course, said it happened for mysterious reasons.

But according to one of the scientists behind this new study, that's incorrect. "We don't have any evidence for the gas coma changing colors," Qicheng Zhang, a postdoctoral fellow at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona and one of the authors of the study, told Space.com by email. "Our result just showed that the gas coma is likely still around and contributing substantially to the overall brightness," Zhang added.

A Giant Butterfly-Shaped Hole

Just Opened in the Sun - 23 Times the Size of Earth!

On September 11, 2025, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured an extraordinary event: a massive butterfly-shaped coronal hole on the Sun's surface. Spanning approximately 186,000 miles (300,000 km), this dark region is over 23 times wider than Earth!

Coronal holes are areas where the Sun's magnetic field opens outward, allowing charged particles to escape as high-speed solar wind. While these holes are a natural part of the Sun's activity, their size and shape in this instance are truly remarkable.

This solar wind may reach Earth soon, potentially triggering mild to moderate geomagnetic storms, which can enhance auroras near the poles. As we approach the autumn equinox, the alignment of Earth's magnetic field increases the chances of visible auroras.

Stay tuned for updates on this fascinating solar phenomenon!

This man is called Michael Rockefeller and he's heir to the powerful Rockefeller family. After his boat sank near an island in 1961, Michael disappeared forever. This last photo being taken of him alive of the tribe that possibly ate him. The surprise came a few years later when National Geographic made a new documentary about the asthma tribe and found a man very similar to Michael as if he had joined the tribe.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) detected frozen water, as ice grains, within a distant protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula, an exciting discovery that confirms water's presence in alien planetary systems and provides insight into planet formation beyond our Solar System. The Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) captured high-resolution images of the disk, named 114-426, revealing the water ice at a specific 3-micrometre wavelength, a detail only JWST could observe. This significant finding suggests that the essential ingredients for life may be present in other star-forming regions, even before the actual planets have formed.

John Allen Chau, an American evangelical Christian missionary was killed by the Sentinelese, a tribe in voluntary isolation, after illegally traveling to North Sentinel Island in an attempt to introduce the tribe to Christianity. He was awarded the 2018 Darwin Award.

In his first contact attempt with the tribe, the first islanders to appear reportedly carried their bows with unstrung arrows. Later, when they had their arrows strung on their bows, John paddled out of range and returned to the boat. He approached again that afternoon, delivering more gifts and approaching an islander before a young Sentinelese man shot an arrow that lodged firmly in the waterproof Bible he was carrying.

On that second contact attempt, John got out of his kayak hoping to appear less threatening.
When he retreated from the island, he left the kayak, with his U.S. passport inside, and swam back to the fishing boat. After that eventful day, he poured out his heart in the pages of his journal, which the fishermen later delivered to Christian friends.

"The plan now is to rest and sleep on the boat and in the morning to drop me off by the cache and then I walk along the beach toward the same hut I've been giving gifts to. It's weird - actually no, it's natural:

I'm scared." He wrote.

On Nov. 16, 2018, John went ashore on North Sentinel Island for the last time. When the fishermen returned the next day, according to the police report, they saw "a dead person being buried at the shore which from the silhouette of the body, clothing and circumstances appeared to be the body of John Allen Chau."

Nothing is known about what happened between John's arrival on the beach and his death.

Scientists have successfully used CRISPR gene-editing technology to cut HIV out of human immune cells for the first time in history. The University of Amsterdam team demonstrated they can completely eliminate the virus from infected cells using molecular scissors that target and remove viral DNA embedded in the human genome.

The breakthrough builds on the first human trial of EBT-101-001, conducted by Excision BioTherapeutics and Washington University. Six HIV-positive patients received a single intravenous injection containing CRISPR molecules delivered by a modified virus that specifically targets CD4+ T cells where HIV hides. The treatment seeks out dormant viral DNA and cuts it from the cell's genetic code.

No patients experienced serious adverse events, and crucially, no off-target DNA damage occurred-meaning CRISPR only cut where intended without harming healthy genetic material. The treatment cleared completely from patients' bloodstreams within six months, leaving behind permanently edited cells.

One patient showed particularly promising results with delayed viral rebound lasting almost 16 weeks after stopping HIV medications, compared to typical rebounds within days. This patient also demonstrated a significant drop in their HIV reservoir-the hidden pool of infected cells that current drugs cannot eliminate.

The approach targets HIV's most persistent weakness. Unlike medications that suppress active virus, CRISPR attacks the dormant viral DNA integrated into immune cell genomes. These latent reservoirs force patients to take daily antiretroviral therapy for life, because stopping treatment allows sleeping virus to reawaken and multiply rapidly.

Dr. Rachel Presti from Washington University calls this "a first step" toward eliminating HIV entirely from the body. While HIV rebounded in all patients who temporarily stopped medications, the delayed rebound in one participant suggests CRISPR successfully reduced their viral reservoir-proof that permanently editing out HIV is scientifically possible.

“I Was Convinced We’d Found Aliens”: Scientists Backtrack on K2-18b Breakthrough Before Revealing the Devastating Truth

Researchers re-examined data on K2-18b, broadening the pool of atmospheric chemicals from 20 to 90, weakening earlier claims of alien life.
🌌 Initial excitement was sparked by the detection of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), considered potential biosignatures.
📊 Updated studies found no statistically significant evidence of these compounds, highlighting the need for robust scientific methods.
🔭 Advanced technology and future observations are crucial for gaining a clearer understanding of exoplanetary atmospheres and the potential for life.
