“Family history is an incredibly diverse subject, encompassing oral accounts of previous generations, ancestry, recipes, remedies, photographs, documents, folk songs, family heirloom pieces, and the construction of a family tree. Capturing family history can take various forms, each offering a unique perspective, for instance, we have undertaken a couple of projects where we delved into a family’s culinary journey, tracing their history through food and preserving cherished, handed-down recipes in a cookbook.”

My favourite childhood memory is surely of my 12th birthday treat from my parents - a trip to the Red Fort and a delectable dinner at the internationally famed, Karims, in Chandni Chowk for the first time. Since then, owing to nostalgia, and a little bit of my elder brother's tendency to stick to routine- we kept going back every year, either for his birthday or mine.

Despite growing up in the modern neighbourhood of South Delhi, I think it was these spaces of Delhi that I came to love more, and by extension, history, the Mughals, the curiosity to engage with people across socio-economic stratas and of course, food! History came to mean more than what was taught in the classroom here: present in the everyday lives of people , their food and stories etched in collective memory. As a personal historian, it is these everyday histories, I seek to learn more about!

Ahvana recently joined Family Fables Company in the capacity of a Personal Historian. She holds an under graduate and master's degree from Delhi University in History, and completed her MPhil from the Centre for the Study of Social Sciences, Kolkata.

I was merely informed that I was to be married. All I knew was that my marital family was from Bihar and my prospective husband was a ‘son of a Judge’ city of Patna. In just a matter of days, I shed the visage of the jovial and good-humoured ‘Baby Mani’ to a woman who was milder, grounded and rooted in the family values as ‘Smt Jayanti Sinha’.

Belonging to the family of a prominent public servant, our household was very bureaucratically affluent. Babuji was a religious man and frequently organised satsang. There were parties and social gatherings marked by the presence of the public elites. During Babuji’s tenure as Chief Justice of India, he was invited to Rashtrapati Bhawan for many social events. Once, he received a personal invitation from Dr. Rajendra Prasad, then President of India, to attend a kirtan. For all of us, it was a matter of great prestige and honour to attend a function at the President’s invitation.

My mother-in-law was a simple woman and didn’t care much for pretences. She would never wear anything extravagant and was extremely comfortable in her traditional sarees. She was very fond of woollen sarees from Kashmir; they are timeless possessions for us. She would only use it on rare occasions but never shied away from repeating any piece from her wardrobe.

We’re thrilled to announce the release of our latest book!

Jayanti—A Memoir documents the incredible life of Jayanti Sinha—tracing her journey from the tender, sun-dappled days of childhood in Seraikela to the trials that shaped her unshakable spirit. Her story is a vivid mosaic of love, resilience, and wisdom, lovingly woven across decades.

More than just a memoir, this is a tribute to a woman who bridged generations, welcomed change with grace, and led by the quiet power of example.

As the sun rose, a lion strolled terrifyingly close to our jeep, its golden mane glowing in the morning light. I didn’t even need to zoom in. This close encounter gave me one of my favourite shots, capturing the essence of the wild at dawn.””

Memoirs are special. You might think they just list a person’s history and wonder if that’s really important. But memoirs do so much more.

One person’s story carries lessons, wisdom, humor, and a unique perspective on the world around them. They capture the tiny details that make a life memorable, not just the events, but the feelings within them. The threads that connects people. The quiet, seemingly ordinary moments. The things only that person would remember.

Memoirs help bridge generations. They let future generations understand who you were and how you saw the world.

That’s why documenting your story matters. Because if you don’t, who will?

A keepsake crafted with love, and care. We’re so grateful for your kind words.

Thank you  for trusting us with your mother's story and making us a part of her milestone birthday

________

"I had the pleasure of interacting with Samrata last year to put together a personalised book celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday.

Samrata is a wonderful professional; not only did she quickly grasp and address key requirements, but she provided amazing recommendations and ideas along the way. From our first meeting itself, I felt reassured that Samrata would give this project the required time and attention, and treat it as if it was for one of her family members.

Samrata’s (as well as her team’s) seamless ex*****on of the project within tight timelines impressed me. Despite a busy travel schedule for both of us, Samrata leveraged technology to enable regular online discussions, showcase graphical representations of the book (while WIP) and pivot as and when required.

The final product was excellent capturing key moments and personal messages from  family and close friends. It was amazing to see my mother go through the book and relive some of her fondest memories.

Thank you Samrata and the Family Fables team!"
