హిందూ మత పండుగలలో మహాశివరాత్రి ప్రశస్తమైనది. ప్రతి ఏటా మాఘ బహుళ చతుర్దశి నాడు చంద్రుడు శివుని జన్మ నక్షత్రమైన ఆరుద్ర యుక్తుడైనప్పుడు మహాశివరాత్రి వస్తుంది. శివుడు ఈ రోజే లింగాకారంగా ఆవిర్భవించాడని శివపురాణంలో ఉంది. హిందూ పురాణాల ప్రకారం దేవతలు లేదా దేవుళ్ళు అంటే స్వర్గ లోక నివాసులు, పరమ పవిత్రులు, పూజింపదగిన వారు. హిందూ గ్రంథాల్లో వారికి ఒక ప్రత్యేక స్థానం ఉంది. వారి గురించి ఎన్నో రకాలైన కథలు, పురాణ గాథలు, ఇతిహాసాలు ప్రచారంలో ఉన్నాయి. ఇంత మంది దేవుళ్ళు ఉన్నా పరమేశ్వరుడు ఒక్కడే. ఆయనే సృష్టి అంతటికీ మూలాధారం. ఆదిదేవుడిగా, సర్వజ్ఞుడిగా, భోళాశంకరుడిగా, పరమశివునిగా కీర్తించబడే పరమాత్మయే పరమేశ్వరుడు. అందుకే మహాశివరాత్రికి ఎంతో ప్రాధాన్యత ఉంది.
