Uri Without , Locals Suffer

Uri, May 29 (GNS): The Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has been functioning without a paediatrician for the last one week, following the resignation of the only paediatrician posted at the hospital.
A delegation of concerned parents told GNS that the absence of a paediatrician is causing immense hardship for the residents. “Earlier, we had a paediatrician and our children received proper medical care. Now, after the doctor’s resignation, we have no paediatrician available at the hospital,” they said.
Due to the unavailability of a paediatric specialist, residents are being forced to travel long distances to Baramulla or Srinagar hospitals for their children’s treatment. The delegation emphasised that at least two paediatricians should be posted at SDH Uri, given that the hospital serves a large population across the twin tehsils of Uri and Boniyar. “It is unfortunate that a facility catering to such a vast area is currently without a single paediatrician,” they added.
The delegation urged J&K Health Minister Sakina Itoo, MLA Uri Dr Sajjad Shafi, and Health Secretary Dr Syed Abid Rasheed Shah to intervene and ensure the immediate appointment of at least two paediatricians at SDH Uri.
A local Mohd Ashraf shared a distressing experience. He said, “My baby was suffering from severe abdominal pain this morning. On our way to the hospital, we were informed that there was no paediatrician available. We had no option but to rush to Baramulla for treatment.”
It is worth noting that the position of consultant paediatrician at SDH Uri is vacant for over a year now.
SDH Uri serves more than 100 villages across the twin tehsils of Uri and Boniyar, which have a combined population exceeding 2,80,000. The region is predominantly hilly, with many residents living in remote and difficult terrains. Notably, around 40 villages in the area are located along the Line of Control (LoC).
Meanwhile, Block Medical Officer (BMO) Uri Dr Balwinder Singh told GNS, “The issue has already been taken up with higher authorities for necessary action.”(GNS)
