Varanasi, October 16: The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has announced that property owners with outstanding house tax dues must register under the One-Time Settlement (OTS) Scheme by November 14, 2026, to receive a 100% waiver on accumulated interest.

According to the municipal corporation's press release, property owners who complete registration by November 14 and pay their outstanding tax by December 31, 2026, will receive a complete interest waiver. Those who fail to register before the deadline will have to pay the original tax amount along with applicable interest and surcharges.

Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal reviewed tax collection across four zones—Adampur, Varunapar, Rishi Mandavi and Sarnath—and directed officials to organise special registration camps and accelerate recovery.

According to official figures, 97,857 properties have outstanding dues totalling ₹295.73 crore, including ₹209.96 crore in principal tax and ₹85.76 crore in interest.

If all eligible property owners register and fulfil the payment conditions, interest relief worth approximately ₹85.76 crore could be provided.

However, only 9,248 property owners have registered so far. The registered accounts represent ₹24.86 crore in dues, against which ₹3.96 crore has been collected.

The Municipal Commissioner has instructed officials to increase public awareness and review collection progress again after 15 days.

Property owners are advised to register before November 14 and clear their eligible dues by December 31 to benefit from the interest waiver.

Varanasi: Preparations for Dussehra celebrations are underway at Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) Ground, where a 70-foot-tall Ravan effigy with a single head is being prepared instead of the traditional ten-headed design.

According to a ground report by DALIMSS News reporter Tanishka Upadhyay, the celebrations will also feature a 65-foot Meghnad effigy and a 60-foot Kumbhkaran effigy.

Speaking to DALIMSS News, artisan Shamshad Khan explained that the decision to create a single-headed Ravan was intended to introduce a fresh appearance. He said similar designs had been used around four years ago, while the ten-headed version had featured in recent celebrations.

Another major change this year is the use of cloth instead of paper to cover the effigies. Khan said the material was chosen to give the structures a more attractive appearance.

Highlighting his family's longstanding association with the tradition, Khan revealed that he represents the third generation of artisans involved in making Dussehra effigies. Around seven family members and relatives are participating in the preparations.

The changes are expected to give this year's Dussehra celebrations at BLW Ground a distinctive appearance while continuing the traditional craftsmanship associated with the festival.

Varanasi: A controversy has emerged over alleged missing gold plating at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, with a complaint reportedly reaching the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). However, the temple administration has denied the allegations of theft.

Advocate Nityanand Rai, former General Secretary of the Banaras Bar Association, has alleged that gold plating appears to be missing from approximately 8–10 locations on the temple's golden structures. He claimed that yellow paint was visible in some areas, while gold layers appeared loose in others.

On September 23, Rai reportedly sent complaints to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Varanasi officials and temple trustees, demanding details about the quantity, purity and condition of gold and silver used in the temple.

According to Rai, his complaint was marked as resolved on October 9, but he remained dissatisfied with the explanation.

Meanwhile, Varanasi Divisional Commissioner S. Rajalingam rejected the theft allegations, explaining that a small golden kalash or decorative section had fallen during a hailstorm approximately three months earlier. He stated that the damaged portion was safely stored in the temple's locker.

However, Rai has questioned whether this explanation addresses the other locations mentioned in his complaint.

The controversy has raised questions about the maintenance and documentation of the temple's gold-covered structures.

No gold theft has been independently established, and the exact nature of the PMO's intervention remains unconfirmed. Further clarification from the authorities is awaited.

Traders Question Exhibition Rules

According to representatives of the campaign, concerns have been raised regarding the exhibition's buying and selling arrangements, compliance with commercial regulations and opportunities available to local traders.

They have demanded greater transparency and fair participation for small businesses and traditional artisans.

The concerns reflect the challenges faced by local jewellery markets amid changing consumer preferences and increasing competition.

Varanasi: A controversy has emerged in Varanasi over entry restrictions at Garba and Dandiya events, after Bajrang Dal's Kashi unit reportedly placed posters outside several lawns and clubs stating that non-Sanatanis would not be permitted to enter.

According to Bajrang Dal Kashi regional chief Nikhil Tripathi 'Rudra', Garba is a cultural and religious celebration dedicated to Goddess Durga. He alleged that complaints had been received regarding the participation of non-Sanatanis and alcohol consumption at some events.

Tripathi stated that the organisation had submitted a memorandum to the Varanasi Police Commissioner, requesting increased monitoring of Garba and Dandiya programmes.

He further claimed that Bajrang Dal volunteers would check Aadhaar cards at event entrances and use religious markers such as tilak and kalava to identify participants.

The organisation has also warned that event organisers, the administration and individuals concerned would be held responsible for any untoward incident.

The announcement has raised questions about religious discrimination, public safety and the authority of private groups to impose entry restrictions or verify identification documents.

There is no confirmation that the police or district administration has authorised Bajrang Dal volunteers to conduct such checks. An official response from the administration is awaited.
