Because the glacial meltwater carries a heavy load of sediment, gravel, and silt, it constantly deposits and re-cuts new pathways, creating a complex, ribbon-like web of interconnected streams.
The deep gray, charcoal, and black riverbeds are composed of basaltic volcanic sand and eroded volcanic rock.
Golden / Rust-Colored Sediment & Vegetation:

The Ancient Maya City and Protected Tropical Forests of Calakmul, Campeche is a UNESCO Mixed World Heritage site located in the southern region of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, near the border with Guatemala. Inscribed as a cultural site in 2002 and expanded into a mixed natural and cultural site in 2014, it represents one of the most significant combined archaeological and ecological preserves in Mesoamerica.
The Ancient Maya City
During the Classic Maya period (c. 250–900 AD), Calakmul was the powerful seat of the Kaan (Snake) dynasty. It served as the primary geopolitical rival to Tikal (located in modern-day Guatemala), controlling vast networks of vassal city-states across the Maya lowlands.
The Surrounding Tropical Forest
The archaeological zone lies within the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, covering over 720,000 hectares. It forms part of the Selva Maya (Maya Forest), which is the largest continuous expanse of tropical rainforest in the Americas after the Amazon.

This striking bird is a Barn Owl (Tyto alba).
Distinctive Features: Instantly recognizable by its heart-shaped white facial disc, large dark eyes, and lack of ear tufts. Its plumage features a blend of soft cinnamon-buff and grey-brown upperparts with pale underparts.
Exceptional Hearing: The heart-shaped facial disc acts like a radar dish, funneling sound directly to its ears (which are placed asymmetrically on its head). This allows it to locate small rodents in complete darkness by sound alone.
Silent Flight: Specialized fringe-like serrations on the edges of their flight feathers muffle the sound of air passing over their wings, allowing them to swoop down on prey completely undetected.
Diet: Primarily feeds on small mammals such as voles, mice, shrews, and rats.
Habitat: Open countryside, agricultural land, grasslands, and marshes. They often nest in hollow trees, old barns, or artificial nest boxes.
