Anne Luther Bagby was an American Baptist missionary who served faithfully in Brazil. Born into a devout Christian family, she was baptized at the tender age of eleven, having always shown a deep desire for God’s service. In 1879, she graduated from Baylor Female College, after which she worked as a teacher.
In 1881, she married William Buck Bagby, a man who had received a clear missionary calling. That same year, this newlywed couple set out for Brazil as missionaries under the Foreign Mission Board.
Planting the Gospel in Brazil
At that time, Brazil was predominantly Catholic, especially in the region of Bahia, where they first settled. Within just two years of their ministry, the couple established the first Portuguese-speaking Baptist church in the region.
