Happy Janmashtami!

"When the Lord assumes a human-like body to show mercy to His devotees, He engages in such pastimes so He will attract those who hear about them to become dedicated to Him.
So in this verse Vyasadeva uses the imperative of the word ‘bhavet’ and by doing so he insists that his listeners should always hear about Krishna’s pastimes. It's not something that may do or may not do, but it is something we must do! Krishna has appeared in a human-like form and He is engaged in Vrindavan pastimes, which are filled with sweetness and simply hearing about Him our heart will be cleansed of material attraction. And not to do that, would be going against the most essential spiritual duty to hear about Krishna and remember Krishna."

We will read a prayer which Srila Prabhupada was very fond of. This is such a pure expression of the heart of Prahlada Maharaja. When you hear this verse, you can immediately think why Prahlada was such a role model for Srila Prabhupada. Prahlad was fearless, Prabhupada was fearless. Prahlad had compassion and Prabhupada had compassion. Under any circumstances, Prahlad cannot be stopped and Prabhupada cannot be stopped.

Srimad Bhagavatam 7.9.28: "My dear Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, because of my association with material desires, one after another, I was gradually falling into a blind well full of snakes, following the general populace. But Your servant Nārada Muni kindly accepted me as his disciple and instructed me how to achieve this transcendental position. Therefore, my first duty is to serve him. How could I leave his service?"

We can see that Prabhupada was always fixed on the instruction of his spiritual master. He said: “My spiritual master saved me.” Therefore, his first objective in life pleased his guru. His whole life was spent in preparation for the opportunity to please his spiritual master. He went to America and the foreign countries for the pleasure of his spiritual master.

"That's the harsh reality of this world - we can never become permanently satisfied here within this world. And that pushes people more and more and more to try to experience satisfaction. But they never become satisfied. And some people, in their frustration, they will turn to alcohol, they will turn to drugs, they'll turn to different things like that. Due to frustration of material existence. That's why we're saying that people should wake up. Like everyone in human society should take the wake-up call and understand that we're not bodies, but we're spirit souls."

"8 400 000 species of life and even within the human species of life there 400 000 different species. Some undoubtedly higher, like devatas, and some are lower, but with the human form of life comes intelligence and the power of discrimination. It’s everybody's responsibility to utilize that for cultivation of self-realization in Krishna consciousness."

Narada says, “Truly this amazing energy of the supreme controller is inconceivable. But nothing can be hidden from Krishna’s pure devotees.” They have absolute faith in Krishna, they have absolute knowledge of Krishna. Like sometimes, in the very old days of ISKCON, these books were coming out, and we would read the books, and we would find very phenomenal subject matter, and we would sometimes read just something so inconceivable that we could not understand. So we would say, “Prabhupada, what to do?” He would say, “Please just keep reading. Continue reading and continue chanting, then your consciousness will be purified, and when that consciousness is purified, then nothing will be hidden from you.”

“Endeavor of love of God, bhakti, should be unconditional and unbroken. Yayatma suprasidati, Suta Goswami says that if you do this type of activity, then it will thrill your soul like no other activity ever thrilled your soul. He doesn’t just say ‘prasidati’, that you’ll be peaceful and satisfied and fulfilled. He says ‘suprasidati’, you’ll become SUPER excellently satisfied and fulfilled.”

As long as there is breath, and as long as there is prana, or life within our body, we will dedicate that prana, and that live and that breath for giving these wonderful Holy Names to others. We have nothing else to do with our lives. We serve the Holy Names of Sri Krishna and we serve the feet of vaisnavas, we serve the feet of our spiritual masters, we serve the feet of our founder acarya, and by doing this our life will achieve perfection.

"Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami says in Caitanya Caritamrita that by Lord Caitanya’s mercy a blind man can see stars in the sky, lame man can walk across mountains and a fool will recite poetry. The mercy of Caitanya Mahaprabhu is so powerful that if one is dependent on Lord Caitanya and he remembers Lord Caitanya - anything can be achieved. Consequently, this Krishna Consciousness movement should be spread around the world, so the people can come in contact with Lord Caitanya and taste His mercy."

We should try to have loving exchanges. It is so important. If we really try to love one another and serve one another and care for one another, the problems of life will go away. But as long as we are seeing some problems and differences with one another, then there will always be some walls. It would be so ecstatic if we all just really cared for one another. After all, the thing that people want the most is to be loved. After all the philosophy has said, after all the philosophy has done, basically we just want to be loved, and we’d like to show love without being hurt. That’s all we want. And we’d like to love Krishna that way, we’d like to love the devotees that way. But the mind oftentimes creates so many problems. We should try to serve, we should try to love. Our big objective should be to love the devotees.

Just understand, when you give up your body you cannot take wealth and reputation along with you. And Lord Chaitanya said that this is why naturally devotees just give up material things and they just serve the Lord with determination. We don't want mixed bhakti with karma, jnana, or mysticism. We want to engage in pure bhakti, no material desires in the heart. And then when we come to that position, we will become very satisfied and we can float in the ocean of premananda [blissful ocean of love of God]. But as long as a concept of “I” and “Mine” is present, the heart will not be satisfied.
