In Mosul, basements are integral parts of the old abodes, where temperatures are lower than in the upper parts of the house. This makes them optimal spaces for families to gather during the long summer days.
Basements have served as shelters during the city's past wars, where people stored their essential needs. Additionally, they operated as safe havens, providing families with the necessary settings to survive until the arrival of liberating troops.
Sadly, many families met their unfortunate destiny under the rubble while waiting for rescue teams that couldn't arrive on time. On the other hand, the people of Mosul are aware of the importance of basements due to memories of past wars.
