IRAN SAYE THEATRE BRINGS “IN YER FACE THEATRE” TO PERSIAN READERS

Here at Iran Saye Theatre, we believe in the power of theatre to transcend borders, both geographical and ideological. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce the translation and publication of the first chapter of In Yer Face Theatre by Alex Sierz, a groundbreaking work that has revolutionized our understanding of performance and its impact on audiences.

What is In Yer Face Theatre? This book is not just a collection of plays; it’s a manifesto, a call to action for theatre artists to push the boundaries, confront taboos, and engage audiences in a visceral, raw, and unforgettable way. In Yer Face Theatre explores the concept of “in-yer-face” theatre, a style that emerged in the 1990s, characterized by its use of shock tactics, heightened language, and direct engagement with the audience. This approach challenges traditional theatrical conventions and pushes the boundaries of what is considered acceptable on stage.

Why is this book important? In Yer Face Theatre is essential reading for anyone interested in theatre, particularly for those seeking to understand the evolution of contemporary performance and its role in a rapidly changing world. Sierz’s insights offer a critical lens through which to examine the power of theatre to challenge social norms and provoke dialogue, to engage audiences on an emotional and intellectual level and to create transformative experiences through radical aesthetics Iran Saye Theatre’s Commitment to Translation We believe in the power of sharing knowledge and fostering cultural exchange. Translating and publishing the first chapter of In Yer Face Theatre is a testament to our commitment to bringing cutting-edge theatrical theory and practice to Persian audiences.

For the fifth time, Iran Saye Theater proudly participated in the OFF Avignon Festival, this time with our production of Persephone. We emphasize OFF because everything that transpires within the vibrant streets and squares of Avignon for a month, everything captured in exciting films and photos, belongs to this independent spirit. It is the OFF Avignon, not the main festival confined to a few halls and closed doors, that truly embodies the essence of discovery and freedom.

Saye Theater has graced prestigious stages and remote corners of the world. For us, the prestige of the venue is secondary. Our participation in OFF Avignon holds immense value: it signifies our commitment to exploring the boundaries of theatre. We believe in the inherent connection between theatre and democracy, and true democracy never thrives in the center. The center exerts an inescapable gravitational pull, swallowing dissent like a black hole. This is why we choose to stand with the "non-chosen," those who operate outside the confines of conventional recognition.

We are fortunate to share this conviction with our French collaborators, a partnership we have cultivated for years. Our performance of Persephone, featuring Fahimeh Hormozi, Sajieh Ashouri, and the collaborative talents of Benyamin Esbati, Parsa Youset, Farnoosh Naderpour, Narges Sadeghian, Mehdi Mashhour, and Sara Rasoulinejad, took place from July 14th to 16th, 2024.

The postcard below, left by two audience members, embodies the true essence of theatre for us: a powerful reminder of the profound connection between artists and the audience. It is this connection, forged in the heart of the OFF Avignon, that truly enriches our artistic journey.

Persephone is a Greek myth that is universal. This also delves into the death/life concept. Iran Saye Theatre portrays it in a most unique and creative way. A truly artistic piece with incredible physical movements. Tightly structured and directed by Mehdi Mashhour this piece is something different. Only 3 shows. 14-16 July at 19h00.

Following the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement, Iranian theatre has entered a new phase. Many theatrical groups have refused to perform in government-controlled venues, turning to underground and clandestine forms of performance to express their support for the movement and its goals. This has given rise to new forms of theatre, which can be examined from various perspectives. Saye Theatre has attempted to explore these shifts in artistic perspectives through a four-day seminar featuring seven essays and a conversation panel.

"Walking through the Darkness" is the result of one of Saye's five research committees, which dedicated approximately four months to this project.

The South Australian premier of Iran Saye Theatre’s “Persephone” is challenging - and remarkable!

The Ancient Greek myth revolves around the kidnapping and marriage of Persephone, daughter of the goddess of the harvest Demeter, to God of the Underworld, Hades. Demeter’s grief affected the crops across Greece and her appeal to Zeus result in the King of the Gods intervening to arrive at a compromise of sorts with Hades. As with many Ancient Greek myths, the forces of darkness are as cunning as their stella counterparts, so the arrangement results in Persephone spending six months on Earth with her mother- an annual reunion- the other six in Hades.

A powerful example of experimental theatre in which contemporary dance and physical theatre play significant roles, “Persephone” opens with Demeter (Sajie Ashouri) and her daughter (Fahimeh Hurmozi) having set up camp at the foot of the mountain with the intention to scale it the following day. The white inner skin and frame of a tent sits opposite the pair engaged in an intense conversation in Persian. An engagingly humorous moment involving the pair enveloped in a white sheath of fabric breaks the tension and the motif of rebirth is introduced when the covering appears to become a va**na. A consistent image throughout, the tent and performers’ bodies are used to profound effect to reinforce this primal symbol of birth and growth.

Upon awakening, Demeter kills her body, ascends, and attempts to awaken Persephone, who is dead. Demeter goes in search of her daughter in the world of the dead. But Persephone has risen and proceeds to tell the story of she and her mother. We find our world in parallel to a cycle of death, disappearance, and rebirth which my later reading discovered represents one of the hundreds of protesting girls who fought for their human rights in Iran only to be killed by the authorities. As with the mothers of Iran, Demeter’s efforts to find her daughter are fruitless, but Persephone decides to return to the world of the living so that they can meet again.

In English, Persephone tells us of the stages of the cycles she and her mother endure, and Ashouri and Hurmozi use appealing hand puppets, speaking in Arabic, in a surprisingly effective way to draw us into the emotional world of the piece. Demeter sings a lament in Turkish, and it becomes clear that she has changed as have the Iranian mothers of lost daughters.

Under Mehdi Mashhour’s tight direction, Ashouri and Hurmozi are mesmerizing. Exquisitely choreographed, highly emotive movement and powerful delivery of the sparse dialogue simply heighten the gravitas of the myth symbolizing death and the regeneration of life and its immediate relevance.

Yes, "Persephone" is intense, but once we accept mythology conveys something essential deeply embedded in a culture, that its conventions defy realism, we find a profound and relevant message about the triumph of the human spirit.

To my mind, “Persephone” is what “Fringe” implies; it is not mere entertainment, nor a cathartic biographical narrative but a piece of experimental theatre with broader implications provoking a powerful experience.

Why, I must ask, are there only three performances scheduled of such a compelling show over the last few days of The Fringe?!?! This simply makes no sense!

“Persephone” will not be everyone’s “thing,” but it is well worth experiencing.

Go! See it!

This is the fourth participation of Saye Theatre by the invitation of TGI company to be part of 2023’ Avignon festival off section.

Previous year's shows of Saye named "the man and the words", "the door" and "he silent house", this time it is "traverse #2".

Travers was performed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival I February2023 for the first time and according to the group tradition, it was staged again, from 23th to 2th July at the Garage International hall.

Fahimeh Hormozi and Sajieh Ashouri were the performers of Travers in Avignon. Although Avignon's performance is based on a glimpse of Electra’s Sophocle and a legendary legend Obome's Japanese.

Sara Rasoulinejad: international affairs
Farnoosh Naderpour: assistant director
