If only we could send a letter back to our younger selves.

This is why I think it’s so important to journal. Because when you’re in the middle of the hard seasons, the closed doors, the setbacks and the plans that didn’t work out, you can’t always see where they’re leading you.

Jake and I got married young. We were living on $400-a-week paychecks, in debt, and wondering how we would ever afford to travel the world someday.

So we got to work. We picked up extra jobs. We said no to a lot of things. We saved where we could. And little by little, we started building a life that looked more like the one we had always talked about.

Ten years ago, this dream of traveling more as a family really started taking shape.

And now, after more than 18 years together, we’re about to sell 90% of what we own, leave our careers behind and hit the road with our kids.

It’s terrifying. It’s exciting. It’s emotional. And we’re incredibly grateful that we get to do it together.

I wish 2006 Jake and Brittany could see us now. 🥹

When Jake and I came to Iceland for the very first time, we had no idea if we’d ever be able to afford to come back.

Somehow, we did. Three more times actually. Just the two of us, celebrating our anniversary and falling more in love with this country every single time.

But each time we came, we talked about how badly we wanted to bring our kids here someday. We promised each other we would work really hard to make it happen.

And this time, it did.

I got to experience Iceland through my children’s eyes.

I can’t even tell you how many times I teared up on this trip just watching them. Watching them climb on rocks, play in the water, stare at waterfalls, run through places that don’t even look real and experience a country Jake and I have loved for so many years.

And then there was this moment.

We were in the middle of nowhere. No houses around for miles. Waterfalls behind us and nothing but open land surrounding us when these sheep started coming toward the kids.

If you’ve been to Iceland, you know the sheep typically want absolutely nothing to do with you. 😂 They usually keep their distance, so the fact that these sweet little guys randomly decided to come over and hang out with us made it even more special.

I just stood there watching my kids love on these sheep, surrounded by one of the most beautiful places in the world, thinking about that first trip when Jake and I weren’t even sure we’d ever make it back.

And now we were standing there with both of our babies.

There are some moments you know you’re going to miss while you’re still living them.

This was one of those for me. 🥹

I’ll never forget it.

I don’t think we talk enough about the part of chasing a dream that can feel a little lonely.

Right now, Jake and I are so hyper-focused on what we’re working toward that other parts of our life have had to take a back seat. I’m not seeing my friends or family as much. I’m trying to homeschool, be present with our kids, be a wife and mom, run our business, create content, answer emails, sell almost everything we own, and prep our house.

And if I’m being completely transparent, I’m tired. We’re both really tired. But our hearts are SO full because we know this is just a season. We’re working really hard for something we’ve talked about doing for years.

We’ve spent years building a safe, comfortable life for our kids, and I’m so grateful for it. But we also don’t want them to grow up afraid to step outside of what’s comfortable. We want them out in the world. Getting dirty, trying things that scare them, learning from people who live differently, doing dangerous things safely, and seeing places they’ve only read about.

And Jake and I are getting out of our comfort zones right alongside them. ❤️

We definitely don’t have this all figured out. Any question or doubt you’ve thought of, we’ve probably already talked about it at 11 PM while painting a baseboard. 😂 We’re learning as we go, and we genuinely love hearing advice from those of you who have done this before.

Right now it’s messy, exhausting, exciting and overwhelming all at once. I’m just trying to give myself some grace and remember that this pace isn’t forever.

Someday I think we’ll look back at this crazy little season and realize it was the beginning of something really beautiful.

SAVE this route for your next Iceland trip 🇮🇸🤘🏻

We took the more adventurous way into Landmannalaugar: Route 1 → F208 South → F224. Expect rough roads, river crossings and some of the most unreal scenery we’ve ever seen.

Our biggest advice? GIVE YOURSELF TIME. This drive can take several hours depending on where you start, conditions and how often you stop… and trust us, you’re going to want to stop. 😆 The drive is part of the adventure! We recommend staying the night so you can actually soak it all in, hike, enjoy the geothermal bathing area and not feel rushed.

A few things to know:
🚙 F208 South requires an approved 4x4 and has multiple river crossings.
🌦️ Always check current road + weather conditions before heading into the Highlands.
🙌🏻 Want an easier route? Take F208 from the NORTH. It avoids the river crossings on the southern route.
🅿️ P1 is before the final river crossings. P2 is by the campground and requires crossing them. Parking reservations are required from June 20–September 13 between 9 AM–4 PM.
⛺️ We stayed at the campground and recommend booking ahead. There are toilets, showers and access to the geothermal bathing area.
🦟 PACK A BUG NET. The midges near the water can be crazy. 😆

And remember, conditions in the Highlands can change FAST. Never attempt a river crossing you aren’t confident in.

Ten years of talking about it, and we finally get to go for it🥹

We made a massive decision for our family, and starting in early 2027, our lives are going to look completely different.

We are letting go of the comfortable, walking away from what is familiar, and choosing time together over everything else. It feels wild, slightly terrifying, and so surreal to finally put this out into the world.

We truly have no idea how many more years we’re going to get of them wanting to dress up with us, so until they tell us to stop… WE ARE DOING IT. 😆🎃

We have made so many amazing memories doing this every year and laughed SO much along the way. Especially the year Jake and I both decided inflatable costumes were a good idea (last year by the way). 😂 Not recommended. You can’t see your kids. You can’t see where you’re walking. Our kids basically had to guide us around the entire time while other children were literally smacking and hitting us as we walked by. 😆

Also, if you’re a parent and you see your child beating up the giant inflatable people walking down the street… can you maybe grab them?! 😂 What is going on?!

Anywayssss 😂 we don’t know how long this little tradition will last, but we’re going to enjoy every single year they still want us right there with them. Someday I know we’ll look back at these pictures and be SO glad we kept saying yes to having fun together. 🥹🫶🏻

Now I’m wondering what in the world we’re going to be this year… 🎃😆

We’ve traveled to Iceland FOUR times, and this is one hotel we STILL talk about! 🇮🇸

This place felt straight out of a movie. And speaking of movies, they were actually filming one while we were there! We got to watch from the outdoor hot tub. 😂

Welcome to Hótel Jökulsárlón!

We’re Jake & Brittany | Family Lifestyle + Adventure Travel , a family of four who typically spend our travel budget on adventures rather than luxury hotels. But THIS is one stay we’d splurge on again!

Here’s why we loved it:

📍 LOCATION: Right off the Ring Road, near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Fellsfjara (Diamond Beach). Convenient but feels incredibly remote!

♨️ HOT TUBS & SAUNA: Outdoor relaxation surrounded by Iceland’s breathtaking landscape.

🌌 NORTHERN LIGHTS: Request a wake-up call so you don’t miss them if they make an appearance!

🍽️ FOOD: Both breakfast and dinner were phenomenal.

🛏️ ROOMS: Some of the BEST sleep we’ve ever had while traveling. Comfortable beds, incredible showers and beautiful rooms.

Is it budget-friendly? Nope! But for a special occasion or an unforgettable splurge, we’d absolutely recommend considering it.

We loved it so much that we kept our hotel key cards. And we NEVER do that. 😂

Your kids really, really, really wanna go to Iceland. 🇮🇸😉

Hi! I’m Brittany, 1/4 of Jake & Brittany | Family Lifestyle + Adventure Travel . 👋🏻

We’re a family from the Midwest who, over the last few years, decided we wanted to adventure more, travel more and keep pushing ourselves through fears and outside of our comfort zones together.

Iceland has become a pretty special place for us. Jake and I have now been FOUR times, but this trip was different because it was finally our kids’ first time coming with us. 🥹

And apparently we decided the best way to introduce them to Iceland was to live in a campervan together for two weeks. 😂

It was our first campervan trip as a family of four, and easily one of our favorite family adventures yet.
