We're hiding in the Grapevine office from the rain at the moment — god, this is awful. Our editor's kid nearly got struck by lightning, and two of us are hoping we can get a ride to our staff party later (or hey, if anyone can drive us to Laugardalur around 17:00 tonight).

But, nevertheless, there are still events. Events we will go to.

Reynisfjara – the black sand beach – in the south of Iceland, saw almost half a million visitors last year. Just 25 years ago, it was just a beach, hardly visited. Now, there is a large parking area, a cafeteria and other facilities. The locals know its dangers: sneaker waves, heavy undertow. To visitors, it just looks like another beach. In the past decade, six tourists have drowned there. On August 2, tragedy struck again when a 9-year-old girl was pulled out to sea and drowned. This has, finally, prompted the Icelandic authorities to act.

"For a town of 2,000 people to suddenly have a luxury spa on their doorstep is surely a good thing."

Countering our contributor's municipal-pool purism, John Rogers makes the case for enjoying the benefits of newer, pool-inspired lagoons and spas.

What team are you on — public pool or fancy spa?

A few years back, our writer watched Jón Karl Helgason’s “Sundlaugasögur,” a documentary on Iceland’s bathing culture, and set her sights on Krossneslaug — a pool on the edge of the world, in one of the furthest corners of Strandir. This summer, she finally made it.
