Rothenburg ob der Tauber mini guide

This tucked away village is said to be the inspiration for Pinocchio’s village and the German pavilion at EPCOT!

It’s small enough to be a day trip, but worth staying overnight for how magic it gets at night! There’s a serenity that feels like you’ve stepped back in time once the day trippers leave.

Do the night watchman walking tour! It’s a fresh angle on a historic walking tour, and it runs almost every night all year!

It’s home to THE Christmas store! is the best Christmas store I’ve ever seen, and their flagship store is in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Worth a stop even if you don’t plan to buy anything; it’s part shop and part Christmas museum!

Walk the city walls for unique views of the city. Start at Spitaltor if you want to do the whole thing!

It’s day trip distance from major areas like Frankfurt, Nuremberg, or Munich, so there’s no excuse to not add it to your Germany itinerary!

few snaps of our small town so far!

Here’s what our small German town feels like so far, as an American:

🏡 Historic buildings are everywhere! While our place has a decidedly 1970’s feel to the architecture, we’re two houses down from homes built 200+ years ago. There’s a public fountain 100 yards away, still running. Some have signs on their historic significance, but at the end of the day, it’s still someone’s home!

🍕We get all the charm of a small town, but plenty of shops and restaurants too. We’re slowly trying every place in town and so far there are some great contenders!

🚲 Biking and walking trails are everywhere. To explore nearby farmland, to get to other parts of town, and to get between nearby towns. It’s a commuter’s dream.

🚉 Public transportation is simple and common! It’s true in much of Europe but it’s particularly great here. We can get to the airport in 15 minutes and into downtown Stuttgart in about 30. And those run every 15 minutes, so we don’t have to time our trip perfectly to get there.

Oh hey, remember that house hunters game we played a full week ago?

It took me so long to show the results because we moved in!!!

If you played, we picked home number 3! My husband teased me that I made it sound less great than it actually is - I was trying to not make it not the obvious choice. 😉 But it’s perfect for us! Plenty of space, tons of windows, a cute backyard, and walking distance to so much!

This week looked like getting keys, furniture delivered, boxes and boxes for days, and the never ending unpacking with Nico in tow!

Which would you choose?!?!

We did our own version of house hunters international this week! Here are three home options we looked at.

All three had 3+ bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. These hilariously bad pictures are all from the rental websites, so they’re all equally terrible quality!

🏡Option 1: Historic House
This one was a standalone home with the most historic touches.
- Beautiful big open concept living space
- Garage
- Large yard with fruit trees
- LOTS of stairs
- Bathrooms had hilarious bad tile/asthetics
- Walking distance from town square but you’d walk through a small industrial zone to get there

🏡Option 2: Renovated Restaurant
This space used to be a restaurant but was turned into a set of 3 townhomes.
- Fully renovated; we’d be the first tenants
- Beautiful finished in a modern style
- Small fenced in yard
- Only one of the bathrooms had a shower/bath, on a different floor than the primary bedroom
- Set in a tiny village with lots of walking trails but no town square/restaurants within walking distance

🏡Option 3: Adjusted apartment
This family home has been turned into two apartments.
- Tons of natural light and big windows
- New kitchen and flooring
- Medium fenced in yard
- Has an upstairs neighbor (noise??)
- Tight parking situation
- Walking distance to restaurants but not a real town square

Which would you choose??

We’re here we’re here we’re here!

We made it to Stuttgart! It’s been a whirlwind of luggage, flights, and logistics!

Nico did great and slept a lot on the flights. Jet lag recovery with a baby has been tough, but the flip side is that we’re used to being sleep deprived anyway, so this is more of the same.

I said this in my stories, but the irony of moving abroad with the military is that you’re pretty much stuck on base for the first few days until you figure out your driving situation.

And it’s practically required that they reject your documents somewhere within the process at least once before things get sorted out. (She writes, sitting in the lobby of the vehicle registration office waiting for her insurance to show up on the govt database.)

So fingers crossed that we get this solved today and can get out and about this weekend!

June was for the travel!!

We’ve spent the month on the move:

🌊Soaking in the North Carolina beach at Oak Island
✈️Nico’s first flight and passport stamp: Mexico!
☀️Living our best resort life in Cancun and Playa del Carmen
🧳Learned the ins and outs of travel with a baby (or at least the first draft)
🏡 Seen as much family as we can fit in!

Recap: in May, we moved out of our house, sent our belongings on a boat to Germany, and Logan graduated! So for all of June we’ve been nomading it.

Moving internationally means we’re squeezing in as much as we can these last few weeks!

Little bit of life lately:

Lots of this guy! No surprise here, but my days pretty much revolve around Nico. He’s doing great! And also babies are high maintenance little guys. Both are true.

One thing I haven’t talked about on here: my recovery. I had an unplanned c-section, and unfortunately had some problems healing. I’ll spare you the details but it’s been months of wound packing, trying new things, and finally a wound vac to get this thing healed. The good news is that it’s finally making progress and hopefully I can put the gross healing part of postpartum behind me soon!

Now that I’m recovering, we’re finally getting out of the house for fun again! So far we’ve successfully done dinner, lunch and walks, and a day trip to the strangest thing instagram has influenced me to see in a while (swipe to see)!

what you should know about me, geography edition:

Australia!: my first solo trip I studied abroad in Sydney, but it wasn’t a group program. I got there, found my own housing, banking, classes, and of course friends! I basically dragged them all over Australia and New Zealand over the next six months, and went solo when they weren’t up for it.

China: the trip that inspired my love for exploring new cultures. I went as a teenager with my grandma. (The apple doesn’t far from the tree on the travel front with me.) We spent three weeks covering five cities and it was an incredible experience!

North Carolina: where I grew up. I love NC for the variety it offers: we lived 3 hours from the beach, and 3 hours from the mountains.

USA (all over): I grew up doing the road trip camping thing across the US. There’s so much to see in my own home country and I was lucky to get to experience so much of it as a kid!

Hawaii: I was born there! My parents lived there right out of college, the lucky ducks. They said as soon as I could walk, I’d run straight for the waves!

Italy: I lived in small town northern Italy for five years, where I got to truly experience Italian life. It’s definitely my favorite place I’ve ever lived, and I’d go back in a heartbeat!

Virginia: currently. We’re here for a year for my husband’s graduate school. But we’re moving again in a couple months! (More on that news soon!)

Happy birthday Friuli Venezia Giulia🇮🇹!

In honor of my favorite lesser-traveled region of Italy, here are some of my favorite places to visit:

Laghi di Funsine: these two lakes are gorgeous year round: lush in summer, great leaf color in fall, and majestic with snow! There’s plenty of great hiking around here.

Spilimbergo: an underrated spot known for its mosaic school! If you’re here on a weekday, touring the school is a must. It’s a fascinating way to get an appreciation for how these intricate mosaics are made, and to see both student and professional work!

Eastern FVG Wine country: Italy is packed with great wine, so don’t let anyone tell you the only wine country is in Tuscany. FVG wineries are fantastic and often little known grapes or wines you won’t find exported to the US! My favorite winery is Flaibani, a tiny spot where the tasting is in the home.

Venzone: a cute little mountain town. This spot makes my list entirely based on their annual pumpkin festival, which is so quintessentially Italian fall festival perfection. There’s food, music, performances, period costumes, and more, all using the historic medieval town as a backdrop.

Trieste: probably the most known city in FVG, it’s this fun mix of Italian, Slovenian, and Austrian influences. Formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the mix of cultures mean it’s unlike anywhere else!

Sacile: my own little town had to make it in there! Historically it used to be a vacation spot for rich Venetians, so the architurecture is more Venetian than Friulian. It has a bunch of great restaurants, picturesque rivers and bridges, and festivals year round!

Happy birthday, FVG! 🥂

Hey, it’s been a minute!

Life lately has been all about this guy. Whew, the newborn days are like the twilight zone: not sure when I showered or last slept more than a few hours at a time.

That being said, I’m slowly coming out of the haze and already planning our next trip (and trips for a few of you)!

So returning to your regularly scheduled travel love soon. In the meantime, here’s some cute baby pictures!
