The new addition can be read and experienced as a contemporary layer subordinate to the basilica. The very light and modest structure provides the perfect background to make its visitors aware of the temporality, richness and ornamentation of St.
Peter’s facade.

At the heart of the site, in the plaza directly in front of the church, a glass pavilion framed in corten steel serves as a reception area and shop for visitors, seamlessly fitting into the surrounding historical context. To the right of the church, another glass pavilion, also framed in corten, houses three reconfigurable public rooms, contrasting with the abbey’s stone walls while maintaining a respectful balance between old and new.

Light is seen as a central element in the design to guide the pilgrims on their spiritual journey. Throughout the building, light is introduced through the design of skylights, windows and light wells, symbolizing the enlightenment of faith and spiritual ascension. Pilgrims feel the journey from darkness to light, from inner contemplation to spiritual elevation through the changing light and shadow in the space.

The concept envisions the church itself as an archive, a living record of its evolution over different periods. Our architecture extends from both ends of this "archive," bridging the past and present. In doing so, we not only contribute to the ongoing narrative but also become part of history ourselves.

The new scheme includes three major elements: first, a tower which functions as a private living space for tourists; second, a flate building which functions as activity space for both tourists and local residents; third, several "long corridors" which function as circulation space and service area.

From the iron gate at the entrance, as you gaze inward, the original church and the upper portion of the new structure intertwine closely, almost touching in mid-air, like a delicate kiss from afar. It evokes the image of God and Adam reaching out, their hands nearly meeting.

In San Pietro we can identify various elements with an archetypal character that enter into mutual tension: tall and massive structures and abstract textures of wall fragments that emerge from the ground. Thus, the project consists of a structure which is "excavated" in the ground exploiting the slope on the north side of the hill.

The church built on this "unoccupiable realm" embodies both permanence and transience, creating a sacred atmosphere. As a space for communication with the divine, its very existence evokes sanctity. The architect must design a temporal space that reminds users and visitors that this realm does not belong to us.
