The proposal for the Horseman Retreat at the Hrossaborg Volcano in Iceland draws inspiration from the Japanese art of kintsugi, which translates as “to join with gold.” Just as kintsugi highlights the beauty in the broken, we believe that the retreat’s components—each designed to blend with and enhance the landscape—become greater than the sum of their parts, fostering a harmonious relationship between architecture, its visitors, and the natural wonder.

Where horses and herders once found refuge, now stands “The Crater”, a sanctuary that imitates Hrossaborg’s unique morphology, becoming a man-made crater within the natural one, and a new shelter within the old.

The idea behind the project is that of a shelter open to nature that proposes a panoramic connection with the environment. The aluminium and wood piece is inserted in the place as an element of artificial-technological contrast within a natural intuitive space that welcomes it.

The ground is not simply an existing condition between buildings, but an architectural form that can redefine the boundaries of inhabited space. Our proposal takes the ground as its premise, reimagining the site of Saint Peter’s church in Tuscania through a paving plan that lays out a new plaza for the religious complex.

To minimize disruption and maintain the church’s current view, the major activity mass is embedded in the front of the church, preserving the site’s openness and the direct visual connection between the arch and the church. Other programs requiring
ample daylight are strategically placed on the sides to avoid distracting from the church and to have minimal impact. Two spaces are designed symmetrically with courtyards facing the church.

TRINITY is inspired by the beauty of the existing buildings on this historical site. The project uses the border condition in these zones as a starting point to create space and dialogue between the new and the existing. TRINITY aims to complement the existing buildings by reinterpreting and reflecting existing elements such as the long sloping roofs, Romanesque openings, rhythmic facades, and monumental stairs.
