EARTHEN MACHINE blends industrial rigor with agricultural sensitivity through a spatial and material narrative rooted in transformation and transparency. At its core, the processing plant is organized along a central spine of garage doors, as a flexible infrastructural element that allows spaces to open and close as needed, reflecting the adaptive nature of contemporary food systems

This project focuses on creating an innovative vertical farm in Los Angeles to address energy consumption and resource efficiency in urban agriculture. The design incorporates a unique algae-based facade, where algae in a liquid-filled plastic membrane absorbs sunlight, reduces heat, and generates biogas through photosynthesis to power the farm's LED lights.

"How should we live well?" This question served as the starting point of the design. Rather than simply creating a vertical farm for crop production, the project proposes a multifaceted ecological space where local residents can cultivate both physical and mental well-being.

This project reimagines that history by reversing the logic of extraction. Rather than pulling resources from distant ecosystems, it introduces a self-sustaining, circular system rooted in South Los Angeles—a historically underserved neighborhood that has long been excluded from the benefits of urban infrastructure.

The mechanized spaces of cultivation and processing withdraw from the surface and descend underground, while open spaces for people emerge as spatial boundaries that connect above and below. Between them, the sunken void becomes more than a source of light it is reclaimed as a natural zone within the city, where light, air, soil, and water intersect.

Rather than functioning solely as a production site, the vertical farm becomes a shared space that evolves with the local community. Through this shift, the project proposes a new urban model where production, ecology, and daily life are harmoniously integrated, offering a socially inclusive and environmentally responsive alternative to the conventional factory.

The identity we propose for this vertical farm rejects imposing monumentality. Instead, it embraces everyday, tactile sensibilities, allowing residents to walk through, feel, and interact daily with the building.
