Did you know that in the heart of the scorching North Indian desert town of Jaisalmer, where temperatures can reach a blazing 120°F (49°C), stands an architectural wonder that not only adapts to the heat but empowers young minds too?
Meet the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls’ School, a remarkable project by New York architect Diana Kellogg. This eco-friendly sandstone school, resembling traditional Jaisalmer architecture blended with modern design, was opened in November 2021. What's even more incredible? It earned the prestigious title of the 2020 "Building of the Year" by Architectural Digest India!
But it's not just about the aesthetics. This school is a beacon of hope for the women and girls of the region, where female literacy rates are the lowest in India. The school, commissioned by CITTA, a US non-profit, aims to uplift marginalized communities by providing education.
Braving the challenges of the Thar desert's harsh climate, Kellogg ingeniously integrated ancient cooling techniques to ensure a comfortable learning environment. The indoor temperatures inside the school are a refreshing 20-30°F lower than the scorching outdoors, proving that traditional wisdom combined with innovative design can work wonders!
This project is just the beginning of a three-part architectural marvel that also includes a women’s cooperative center and an exhibition space. With 120 girls currently enrolled, the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls’ School stands as a testament to the power of education and resilience. Kudos to Diana Kellogg and CITTA for creating a masterpiece that stands against the odds.
