25 November 2025 RELIGIONS MAGIC SUPERTITIONS
The Julien Ries Archive for Symbolic Anthropology is organising the 15th International Seminar dedicated to the theme of Religions, Magic and Superstitions. The aim of the seminar is to reflect on some of the past and present relationships between religion and the realm of magic and superstition. What differentiates these dimensions from one another? What traces of their coexistence can be found in the history of religions and in the contemporary world? Cultual, magical and superstitious elements are different symptoms of the persistence of certain fundamental anthropological structures that still emerge today in contexts that at first glance seem unsuspected, such as man's relationship with technology and the ideology of consumption.
'In the decade following 1968, there was a significant and unexpected return to the sacred: charismatic movements; the return of magic, palmistry, astrology and parapsychology; the success and renewal of ancient sects; the creation of new sects [...]. Recent analyses have shown that the apparent decline of religion and the sacred in Western society is nothing more than a change: a metamorphosis of the sacred, a shift and replacement of the places where the sacred is invested."
