Abstract: The essay focuses on the relationship between the practice of investigative agency Forensic Architecture established at Goldsmith College in London in 2010 by architect and theorist Eyal Weizman with artists, architects, journalists, jourists and others, and several artistic practices founded on the social and political impact of technologies. The pivotal concept of agency’s practice is counterforensic, the aim is to turn the forensic gaze, usually oriented from state to citizens, to monitor the states, armies and big companies’ criminal actions. Technology development plays a central role in this context, on the one hand gives power and allow a complete access to sensibile data and images, to states, armies, corporations to control citizens, but on the other hand gives a chance to citizens, ONG, independent researchers like Forenisc Architecture to control their operations. Forenisc Architecture looks at technology tools as a chance to support civil and oppressed people causes. In this context art plays a central role and the essay shows the relationship and the impact of Allan Sekula, Harun Farocki and Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s practices have had on Forenisc Architecture practice.

Abstract: The concept of algorpolitics, previously developed in other writings, finds crucial application in the context of smart cities, where technology, particularly that based on algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI), plays an increasingly central role in the management of urban infrastructures, public services and citizens’ daily lives. This concept would like to highlight the complexities and ethical risks arising from the increasing automation of city governance and algorithmic control, analysing the link between technology and power. In this paper, I will look into some of the ethical challenges that are ever more present in a specific setting such as that of a smart city.

Abstract: This paper explores the relationship between technology and power within the framework of algorithmic governamentality, with a particular focus on the fragmented and ecstatic condition of the user. The hypothesis of the paper suggests that, within algorithmic governamentality, the fragmented-ecstastic condition of the user is used as raw material that fuels the directly proportional relationship between the consumption of user’s transparency and the development of algorithmic opacity in platform society. The paper starts by exploring the relationship between invisibility and opacity in algorithmic governamentality then draws points of contact between: a) the work of Erik Davis on techngnostic philosophies in the informationa age; b) Jean Baudrillard’s concept of the ecstasy of communication; c) Bernard Stiegler’s thoughts on the industry of trace and proletarianization of minds in the automatic society.

Luca Mandara, "Instrumental rationality and power on nature. From antisemitism to social networks"

https://mimesisjournals.com/ojs/index.php/mechane/article/view/5041/3910

Abstract: The paper deals with the manifestation of mimetic tendencies within social networks. Retracing the dialectic between “technique” and “nature” outlined by Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno, the paper argues that such tendencies are not the absolute “irrational” outside, but the other side of the very specific form of rationality embodied by these technologies, which share the same contradictory features of the Western monopoly and financial capitalism. In the end, the paper would also inquiry the possibility of diverging the mimetic impulses from the regressive identification with authoritarian leaders toward progressive politics of emancipation.

Abstract: This article traces a genealogy of algorithmic rationality from ancient rituals to AI according to a theory of machine. It highlights how algorithms, as particular kind of pseudo-machine, shape and reflect humanity’s drive for order and control. From symbolic AI to neural networks, AI systems mirror cultural and political forces. The paper argues AI as particular kind of algorithmic machine isn’t neutral but tied to power and values, advocating for ethical governance and democratization to harness AI’s potential for societal good while acknowledging its deep historical roots in automation, cybernetics and decision-making.

https://mimesisjournals.com/ojs/index.php/mechane/article/view/5039/3908

Abstract: This article aims to examine a pivotal aspect of the climate crisis: the asymmetry between knowledge and power in shaping outcomes. The focus of the study is the gap between the growing body of robust knowledge regarding the climate implications of our production and consumption patterns, on the one hand, and the ability of this knowledge to mobilize social forces, on the other. The explanation proposed – drawing on Marxian and post-Marxian reflections on ideology – argues that knowledge about the climate crisis becomes ineffective because it treats certain elements of the process as fixed and immutable. Building on the theoretical insights of the constructivist approach and analyzing a specific case study – the energy transition – the final chapter explores the conditions under which a non-ideological theory of the climate crisis becomes conceivable.

https://mimesisjournals.com/ojs/index.php/mechane/article/view/5038/3907

Abstract: this paper examines the evolving relationship between humanity and machines, exploring the implications of integrating artificial intelligence into the legal domain. While humans increasingly enhance their capabilities with artificial prosthetics, machines are adopting qualities previously considered uniquely human, such as autonomy and rationality. This convergence raises critical questions about the future of law when traditional boundaries of humanity blur. The discussion highlights the limitations of artificial intelligence systems in understanding language, despite their advanced processing capabilities. Machines, while capable of generating human like responses, lack intrinsic comprehension, reducing their outputs to statistical predictions rather than meaningful communication. In legal contexts, this raises concerns about reducing law to computational codes – transforming the codex into code – and the risks of delegating human decisions to algorithmic processes. Critiquing the notion of “algorithmic decision-making,” the paper argues that true decision-making requires hu-man attributes like intent, context-awareness, and ethical judgment. Machines, by contrast, merely execute pre-defined rules and produce outputs without understanding or moral ac-countability. Ultimately, the paper advocates for embracing the imperfection of human law, emphasizing its adaptability and connection to the societal values it serves.

Diego Lawler, "Standards and power"

https://mimesisjournals.com/ojs/index.php/mechane/article/view/5037/3906

Abstract: Standards are foundational elements that structure the artificial world, influencing the ontological, epistemological, normative, and axiological dimensions of human life. As technical artifacts, they regulate interactions, delineate permissible actions, and subtly distribute power within complex sociotechnical networks. Although often invisible in everyday experience, standards reflect and perpetuate the interests of dominant actors, becoming deeply embedded in global systems and societal values. This article critiques the functionalist perspective on standards and introduces a philosophical framework that positions them as artifacts inseparable from power dynamics. It examines how standards function as instruments of governance and control, with particular attention to their geopolitical implications. The article also highlights the potential for resistance, arguing that the negotiation and contestation of standards can challenge hegemonic norms and foster alternative practices. Ultimately, this work calls for further investigation into the intersection of standards, power, and imperialism to better understand how global hierarchies are reinforced through standardization

Abstract: The paper presents two panels. The first one looks at what happens or, rather, what should happen according to the regulations adopted by the European Union during procedures for the killing of farm animals: a technique is recommended, which should spare the animal unnecessary suffering. Technique and cruelty, technique and humanity, technique and sensitivity, technique and politics: there are many knots that are knotted here. The second panel builds on another animal, duck or rabbit, drawn by J. Jastrow, to raise questions not of the psychology of perception but, in a broader sense, of the politics of images, digital profiling, and social control. Both one picture and the other, in different forms and ways, try to consider the lateral deviations, opening effects, and shifts in meaning that technique can induce. The hypothesis to be suggested is that certainly technique establishes a certain regime of visibility, in its own and specific ways: it forces one to see things in a certain way. But it is also, at the same time, a force of indeterminacy, of breaking niches or environmental circles, and thus not necessarily a place of capture but also, at least potentially, a point of escape.
