"Agent of Birth"
Deng Shiqing
Curated and text by Charles Moore
C+N Gallery CANEPANERI, Foro Buonaparte, 48, 20121 Milano MI, Italy
10.06-24.07.2026

“Agent of Birth“ examines the increasingly transactional realities of reproduction through psychologically charged paintings. Merging Old Master draftsmanship with surreal humor, the body of work uses bodily fragmentation as contemporary social critique. At once seductive and unsettling, the exhibition transforms the figure into a contested terrain where intimacy collides with commerce, technology, and power.

Through "Agent of Birth", Deng reconfigures the language of figurative painting to examine the ethical complexities of surrogacy and reproductive capitalism. Monumental anatomies and carefully rendered surfaces echo the authority of Renaissance painting, yet these bodies are interrupted by synthetic objects, commercial symbols, and absurd narrative details that destabilize permanence and control. Here, the body is no longer idealized, but negotiated, segmented, and subject to external systems. Rather than approaching surrogacy through direct moral judgment, Deng investigates how reproductive technologies and contractual frameworks reshape ideas of bodily ownership and autonomy. The female body emerges as both intimate and public, yet increasingly mediated through labor and consumer desire. [...] (from pr)

"Metamagico" explores Costa's central body of work from the 1970s, revolving around his founding obsession: the relationship between material culture, biological memory, and anthropological origins.
The exhibition follows a path that revisits the archive, the museum, and the ritual as sites where this relationship manifests. The exhibition is part of PAV’s historical research program dedicated to the roots of the relationship between art and the ecosystem - a direction it has cultivated since its foundation but which, in recent years, it has sought to extend to those pioneers who, as early as the 1960s and 1970s, anticipated the questions now central to the debate on ecology, biodiversity, and the memory of the living.
Within this framework, Claudio Costa occupies a unique position: he does not represent nature; he uses it as an archive, as a system of signs, as material that carries within itself the traces of biological and cultural time, convinced that the natural past is not lost but always latent, capable of being exhumed through the artistic gesture. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. In painting, it is not. The path leading from tangible reality to its representation is neither immediate nor linear. To move beyond it — to reach that “state transition” from figuration to the Informal through abstraction — requires a vital, precipitous, deeply personal leap.

At times, this movement unfolds subtly and strategically; at others, it erupts into a catharsis of forms through moments of chaotic epiphany. The painter who emancipates themselves from strict fidelity to the real or the recognizable — to the familiar and the credible — embraces a risk that, veiled in ambiguity, may compromise plastic values historically regarded as resolved.

The project stems from this formal yet poetic reflection, giving shape to an exhibition that intertwines the practices of four artists from different backgrounds, united by layered and highly personal interpretations of contemporary figuration. (from pr)
