A leading price comparison website has reported the biggest annual drop in UK car insurance prices in more than 10 years, with the average cost of cover falling by 16% in the past 12 months.
Confused.com says that the average amount paid by drivers has dropped from £995 per year to £834 for comprehensive car insurance. Chief executive Steve Dukes points to speed control zones introduced in many areas as a factor in this drop.
He told The Guardian: “Some UK insurers are observing that areas where 20mph zones have been introduced result in lower levels of claim frequency – a key factor in the cost of car insurance."
“Though many drivers find these reduced speed zones frustrating, it’s positive to see the bright spot this is creating for drivers’ costs.”
RoadPeace CEO Howard Jones welcomed the news, saying: "We know that speeding is more obvious in a 20mph zone and we know that lower speeds allow time to think, space to brake and more considered behaviour.
"But when insurance companies have cause to reduce premiums, in part because we crash less in 20mph zones, then we need to pay attention. A couple of minutes on a journey, less stress, more thinking, lower costs, less risk of death – it all seems to add up, which is why RoadPeace supports lower road speeds."
