GALA Press Statement

The Movement salutes the revolutionary courage of the youths who stood at the forefront of the protests over the past two days. In the face of repression, intimidation, and state arrogance, you rose as the true representatives of the oppressed masses.

What we are witnessing is not an isolated moment of unrest, but a clear expression of class struggle. The contradictions between the ruling elite and the suffering masses have once again exposed themselves. Those in power seek to maintain control through fear, while the people demand justice, dignity, and material change.

To the youths you are not just participants in a protest; you are agents of historical transformation. You carry the weight of a system that has long exploited your labor, silenced your voices, and denied your future.

Let it be known: repression is the last weapon of a system that is losing its legitimacy. The more the state tightens its grip, the more it reveals its fear of the organized power of the people.

This movement stands firmly with the people of the Gambia, the unemployed, the marginalized the true engine of society. Our struggle is not temporary; it is rooted in the fight to dismantle injustice in all its forms.

We remain organized. We remain conscious. And above all, we remain committed to the liberation of the masses.

The next phase of the struggle will be communicated soon.

Who killed the Cops?
All power to the masses!
Forward ever, backward never.

Ousainou Bojang & Sister Amie Acquitted!

The High Court in Banjul has today acquitted and discharged Ousainou Bojang and his sister Amie Bojang in the high-profile case involving the 2023 fatal shooting of two PIU officers at Sukuta–Jabang traffic lights.

Justice Ebrima Jaiteh cited contradictions in the identification of the shooter and weaknesses in the prosecution’s evidence. This brings to an end a case that has gripped the nation for nearly three years.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has declared that there will be no attestation for Banjul voters!!!

For decades, since independence, the City of Banjul has upheld an inclusive democratic tradition; ensuring that no citizen is left behind in the exercise of their right to vote.

In the absence of traditional authorities such as alkalos or seyfos, the Office of the Mayor has historically provided attestation so that residents without formal documentation could still participate in national elections.

However, the High Court ruling of 13th July 2021 has now brought legal clarity: the Mayor is no longer permitted to issue such attestations.

While we respect the rule of law and the court’s decision, this development presents a serious and urgent challenge for our city.

Banjul is unique. As the capital, it does not have the traditional administrative structures that exist elsewhere in The Gambia.

The immediate consequence is that many law-abiding citizens (through no fault of their own) now face the real risk of
disenfranchisement simply because they lack formal identification and no longer have access to attestation rights which are guaranteed for every citizen of The Gambia by law.

This is not just a legal issue, but it is most importantly a matter of fairness, equity, and democratic integrity.

If no corrective measures are introduced, the upcoming electoral processes risk being fundamentally unequal for the people of Banjul. Citizens here must not be placed at a disadvantage compared to their fellow Gambians.

My decision to not run for election again will not negate my responsibility to the people of my city. Even as I leave office soon, it is important that we recognize that, 5 years after the court ruling, no alternative process or measure has been put in place to correct this gross unfairness.

When the courts provide legal clarity, our institutions must accommodate the societal realities in recognition of these legalities.

We therefore call on the relevant national authorities, including the Independent Electoral Commission and the National Assembly, to urgently address this gap.

Whether through expanded access to national identification or the establishment of a lawful alternative attestation mechanism within Banjul, a solution must be found, and found quickly.

Democracy must be inclusive. Every citizen matters. And every voice deserves to be heard.

Banjul deserves nothing less!”

Christians Barred from Holy Site in Jerusalem.

Israeli authorities have restricted access to the Old City of Jerusalem during Palm Sunday, preventing worshippers from attending services at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Church leaders, including Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, were reportedly unable to enter the site for the important religious event.

Authorities say the measures are due to security concerns linked to regional tensions, while several countries, including Italy, Spain,France, and Portugal, have raised concerns about restrictions on religious access.
Access to major religious sites, including the Al-Aqsa Mosque, has also been limited in recent weeks.
