A new chapter in funeral doom arrives with Torn, the latest album from Abysmal Growls Of Despair.

Slow, heavy, and emotionally direct, this record moves with intention. Each track builds a dense atmosphere where grief and devotion sit side by side, never rushed, never softened. It doesn’t play in the background. It pulls you inside its world and holds you there.

Torn is built around one of the most human experiences imaginable: accompanying a loved one through illness.

Interview: Crimson Day
By: //

Hintf: Thank you very much for this interview, please tell us how all began...

Jesse: In 2011 I was looking for a new active rock band. I found a "wanted announcement" on the internet where a new band was looking for a bassist. This group didn't even have a name yet. A few songs had just been written. After a few auditions I got to be part of the group. At that time our band name was "Speed Ink". The band broke up quite quickly and that's when our current guitarist Ari joined the band. A new singer also joined the band at the same time. big changes, so we decided to change the band name too. We came up with Crimson Day. That's how the history of Crimson Day began

Hintf: How would you describe the evolution of the band sound over the years?

Milka: Crimson Day’s sound has changed quite a lot over the years. The band started from more traditional heavy metal, but since our third album in 2023 we moved towards more modern sound and started to make music without thinking about the genre so much. We added more melodies and different elements from different genres more boldly. And of course the fact that the lead singer changed from male to female in 2020 has a big effect to our sound.

Janne O.: I think the sound of Crimson Day has evolved a lot during the years after every album. Also, every line up change has brought something new to the band's sound. Since the third album the band has taken a big leap towards modern sound and there’s also a lot more versatility in songs and the sound these days.

Hintf: CRIMSON DAY a special reason for that name?

Jesse: There's no funny story or deep meaning behind the name Crimson Day. I remember in 2013 one of the band members mentioned the word "Crimson". After that we started thinking about words that just sounded good together

Hintf: What usually comes first: riffs, lyrics, or concept?

Jesse: Usually our guitarist Ari has done a demo on guitar and then the lyrics. We haven't had very strong concepts, but we have been thinking about doing a concept release of 3-5 songs next. Maybe :)

Milka: Sometimes Ari already has a strong concept when making the demo guitars. Usually the song has a working title that already fits to the song well and sometimes we end up using it. In other cases whatever idea Ari might have had composing the song can change radically if I have an idea of how that particular song feels like and start to write about that.

Hintf: How does the songwriting process works among the members?

Milka: Ari usually comes up with the guitar parts, then we discuss together if it's any good. Afterwards Janne O will arrange the drums to the demo, and then the vocals are done by me. I'm in charge of most of the lyrics and of all the vocal melodies. Ari also writes some lyrics but then leaves it to me to compose the melody. I record demo vocals in my home studio and if it works for everyone we will start to arrange the song together. Janne O. Ari is responsible the most of the composing and in the songs he has some sort of idea about drums. You know, a guide lines of some sort (which I end up following more or less:) ). When I’m building the drum parts, I might end up doing little arranging to the song structure and then send it to others to listen. Then others start to throw in some of their ideas. The songs get their final form in our practise room and everyone is involved. I have also started to bring up some melody/song ideas myself lately which has been really fun and it is nice that I have even been encouraged to do that, especially by Milka.
The title track from “Dark Dimension” was born a bit differently than others. I made the song structure for that song with drums only. Then I sent it to Ari who did his parts on top of that and that’s pretty much what you hear in the end result.

Hintf: Many line up changes?

Jesse: Yes, many. The current singer Milka, is our third singer. Our current drummer Janne.O is also the third. And our current rhythm guitarist Janne.R is also the third (surprise :) ). Only me and our lead guitarist are original. This lineup is by far the strongest in Crimson Day's history!

Hintf: Can we say CRIMSON DAY it is what type of band?

Milka: A heavy metal band. A band that is not afraid to boldly borrow elements of other genres and break the boundaries. I mean if you listen “Hexed” and then “The Winter is Here to Stay” from the new album, you will get the point.

Hintf: How it was received your video "Hexed"?

Milka: Hexed has received very good feedback and some people have told us it's the best song we made so far! Apparently the only ones who did not agree were the Finnish Eurovision (UMK) judges since we applied with Hexed but didn't get really far😀

Hintf: Can tell us more about the new album "Dark Dimension"?

Milka: It's definitely our best album so far when it comes to songwriting, experimenting, producing and mixing & mastering. It's on a whole another level compared to anything we did before. I'm really looking forward to everyone hear the whole album!

Janne O.: I think everyone pushed their limits on this album and tried to make it the very best we can. There are a lot of elements that have not been heard from this band before! And it’s definitely the most versatile album from Crimson Day (so far)!

Hintf: What are your plans for the future?

Milka: Now we will focus on promoting Dark Dimension and playing some shows in Finland during the summer. We are of course already composing stuff for future releases and planning to tour elsewhere in Europe in the future.

Janne R: And Dark Dimension will be releasing in Japan at the end of the June, so we’ll see what that brings to us.

Janne O.: Play gigs and make new songs and try to make Crimson Day an even better band. There are new songs already in the making process and I can’t wait to release those one day!

Hintf: What you know about Portugal?

Milka: Me and our bass player Jesse just were there in April for holidays! We got some amazing food, saw dolphins and beautiful coastlines & caves. I only wish we didn't eat oysters since we got really sick for a few days 😂 I have only visited the Algarve area and would definitely want to explore more! Also one of my favourite dog breeds, Estrela Mountain Dog, is from Portugal. Fun fact that my mom breeds them in Finland and we have two of them at my parents place.

Jesse: Oh yes! A truly beautiful country. I can't wait to go back. I would really like to go surfing in Portugal. I have heard and seen a lot that it is one of the best places in Europe to surf. It is a hobby that I really like, but unfortunately I can't do it in Finland :/

Hintf: Please leave a final message for your fans in Portugal and Hintf readers…

Milka: If you like energetic but doomy heavy metal full of melodies you can sing along, Crimson Day is a band for you! We would really much appreciate if you listen our new album and maybe hit a follow in the socials? Thanks to everyone in advance and I hope to play a show in Portugal one day!
