Villa La Pietra, New York University’s campus nestled in the hills of Florence and Fiesole, will stage its 20th season of artistic performances and exhibitions this late spring and summer. Many events take place, followed by an aperitivo, in the villa’s gorgeous gardens, which date back to the 15th century.

Named after the character played by Giulietta Masina in Federico Fellini’s 1958 Oscar-winning film Nights of Cabiria, the distinctly local vibe of the location has been carried over into its Tuscan-inspired menu that includes dishes like cacciucco, sea bass ravioli and Livorno-style cod, all with the innovative flair of the chef.

A seafood-centred menu in the sociable setting forms the newly revived restaurant and cocktail bar.

Florence will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic on June 2 with a day of institutional ceremonies, public screenings and cultural initiatives centred on democracy, memory and women’s participation in public life.

The celebrations, organised by the Palazzo Vecchio, begin at 10am in piazza della Repubblica with the traditional flag-raising ceremony attended by civic, military and religious authorities. A procession will then move towards piazza della Signoria, where the official ceremony will continue from the Arengario of Palazzo Vecchio with remarks by Mayor Sara Funaro and a reading of the President of the Republic’s message by Florence police chief Francesca Ferrandino. Honours from the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic will also be awarded during the ceremony.

This year’s anniversary marks eight decades since the institutional referendum of June 2, 1946, when Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and establish the republic. It was also the first national election in which Italian women were allowed to vote.
